FARMVILLE – Fuqua School athletics director Lewis “Skeeter” Fore has been reassigned within the school's athletics department, the school announced via a press release on Wednesday.

Fore will continue to serve in the athletics department in an advisory capacity, while assistant athletics director Marcus Gregory will assume the head duties, effective August 1.

Fore will also continue as the school's driver's education teacher, as well as the supervisor of athletics fields, in addition to his advisory duties within the athletics department.

Fore was a student at Farmville High School and graduate of Prince Edward Academy in 1961. He attended Ferrum Junior College and graduated from Lynchburg College, before returning to Farmville to join his former coach, Robert C. Gilmer, at the Academy in 1965.

Fore, who says he graduated from Lynchburg in the morning, and started at Prince Edward Academy later that afternoon, has been at PEA/Fuqua School ever since.

“I think back over the years at all of the relationships. That's the biggest thing for me,” said Fore when contacted by The Herald on Wednesday afternoon. “The coaches I've learned from and the students that have come through here. They've all been a big part of my life as a teacher and coach.”

Fore, who coached basketball and baseball before becoming head coach in 1973, also served as assistant athletics director, until he took over as AD in 2001 for Howard Clabough.

Fore retired as head football coach in November 2012.

“We'll see, going forward,” said Fore, who at age 70, doesn't look like someone who is ready for full-time retirement. “Right now, I will continue to help out any way I can.”

“We are excited that Marcus Gregory has accepted the position of Athletic Director and look forward to his leadership as we continue to strengthen the many athletic opportunities Fuqua School offers,” said Fuqua School president Ruth Murphy in the press release issued by the school. “We are also pleased that Skeeter Fore will continue as a member of our staff. His deep knowledge of athletics, rich experience, and the close relationships he has developed with coaches across Virginia, especially those within our conference, are invaluable.”

Gregory, a 1999 graduate of Prince Edward County High School, and a 2003 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, was named assistant athletics director, director of basketball operations and head boys basketball coach at Fuqua in 2011.

“I am thankful for this new opportunity,” said Gregory in the release. “Coach Fore has done a great job building our sports programs and developing relationships with numerous schools across the state during his years as an Athletic Director and legendary football coach. Fuqua has a strong, family- oriented campus, and I am thrilled to be a part of helping the athletics programs and the school continue to grow.”

In addition to his duties as athletics director, Gregory will continue on as head basketball coach.
