Dr. Charles Jay DeWitt, 92

APRIL 9 – Dr. Charles Jay DeWitt, 92, of Farmville, passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2013 in Farmville. He was born August 3, 1920 in Kingston, NY to the late Charles P. and Theresa McHugh DeWitt.

He served his country during WWII in the United States Army. He then taught high school biology in Victoria. Dr. DeWitt was a lifelong educator, retiring from Longwood College as a Psychology professor in January 1986.

He was an athlete and very much a sports enthusiast. Dr. DeWitt, at the age of 78, made his first of two hole in ones at the old number eight at Longwood Golf Course. He loved football and had season tickets to enjoy his University of Virginia Wahoos. He loved animals especially dogs, having cared for 14 german shepherds.

He is survived by his children, Charles Jay DeWitt Jr. (Ramona) of Waynesboro and Alison DeWitt (David Norman) of Newport News; four grandchildren, Bradley Spencer DeWitt, Taylor Lanier DeWitt, Andrew DeWitt Walker and Lyndsey Erin Walker; his special caretaker for many years, Margaret Harvey and his loyal companion and friend, Rommel. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret DeWitt.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, April 9 at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Rice.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Buckingham Squad Care, Alzheimer's Association in memory of Margaret DeWitt or to the University of Virginia.
