Long Road Home Series Continues At Appomattox NHP

Published 4:25 pm Thursday, March 28, 2013

The five year “Long Road Home” program continues April 5-7, at Clover Hill Village, a living history village owned and operated by the Appomattox County Historical Society.

This year, the program will commemorate and examine the events surrounding the 1865 fall and evacuation of Richmond. Spectators will enjoy battles, cannons, cavalry, the burning of Richmond, a wedding, hospital activities, a working telegraph line and musical entertainment. There will be a barn dance on Saturday night as well as cannon night fire. Spectators will be encouraged to participate in many of the activities conducted throughout the weekend. Generals Lee and Grant, along with many of their staff and subordinate officers, will be present and available to speak with visitors on military matters. Civilians in period dress will mingle with visitors and talk of home life during the period.

The Long Road Home series of events are unlike any other Civil War re-enactment or living history program. Some of the finest living historians extant today will be joined with dedicated Civil War re-enactors to present an unparalleled look into the struggles of the time that will leave spectators and participants alike feeling as if they have stepped back into the 19th century and experienced what it was like for men and women who lived and fought through those critical moments in American history. The program is building momentum each year, both in participants and spectators, in anticipation of the final event to be held in April 2015 with the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the end of the American Civil War in Appomattox.
