The Cumberland High School girls basketball team saw its season come to a close a week earlier and not in the way they would've liked in a 71-36 loss to Amelia County High School on Thursday night in the James River District Tournament Semifinals. The Dukes, who trailed 34-23 at the break, couldn't get much going in the third quarter, but still only trailed 42-29 with 1:29 remaining in the third quarter, following a made free throw by Annesha Harris. Up 54-34 following a made three-point basket by Akira Davenport, Amelia closed the game on a 17-2 run. “We couldn't find the basket,” said CHS head coach Omar Liggins. “It was like night and day from Tuesday [a 56-25 victory over Central of Lunenburg] to tonight. We didn't play good defense tonight. Amelia is a good team, and good enough that if you come into this building and play flat, this is what's going to happen.” Davenport led the Dukes with 12 points on the night, while Ajah Smith scored seven and Kamren Gilliam added six.
