RICHMOND, January 15 – Frances Elizabeth Johns passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2013. She was born on May 6, 1938 in Richmond to James Monroe Johns and Ruth Hall Johns. A graduate of Farmville High School, she was a 1960 graduate of Agnes Scott College, Decatur, GA, followed by a Master's degree in Christian Education in 1962 from Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Richmond. She then pursued a life-long career of service as Director of Christian Education in five congregations: Hilton Presbyterian, Newport News; Raleigh Court Presbyterian; Myers Park Presbyterian, Charlotte, NC; and First Presbyterian Shreveport, LA. She also served as Editor of Children's Curriculum Resources for the General Assembly Mission Board, Presbyterian Church U.S. in Atlanta GA, from 1977-1983.
In 2002, after retiring, Ms. Johns moved to the Cross Ridge Community in Glen Allen. She was active in the community and was a founding member of the Cross Ridge Woman's Club. She was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church in Richmond where she served as an Elder, Moderator of the Christian Education and Memberships Councils.
Survivors include brothers, Robert (Rob) and wife, Janine and daughter, Allie of Richmond, James (Jimmy) Johns and wife, Barbara of Georgia and their sons, James III and his daughter, Megan, Robert and wife, Samantha and their three children, Ben, Abby and Will, John Fiengo and his children, Nicholas, Ashley and Jennifer; Richard Fiengo and wife, Kristen and son, Timothy; step-brother, John Arehart and wife, Fran; step-sister, Mary Frances and husband, William Stoneburg; aunt, Agnes Sweet of California, uncles, Tom and wife, Iva Hall and Charlie (Chuck) Hall, both of Buckingham County; numerous cousins of the Johns and Hall families and her caregivers, Virginia Short and Cheryl Bedford.
Memorials may be made to The Scholarship Fund of the Child Care Center of Second Presbyterian Church in Richmond or the Ministry Fund of Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond.
Visitation will be at Bennett Funeral Home, Glen Allen, Friday, January 18 from 2 p.m.-4p.m. and 6 p.m.-8 p.m.
Church service will be held Saturday, January 19 at 11 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, Richmond. A private burial will be held Saturday at Westview Cemetery in Farmville at 3 p.m.
