FARMVILLE – The Park View boys basketball team eased their way to the championship of the second-annual Call Me Mister Tournament played over the weekend at Willett Hall on the Longwood University campus.
The Dragons defeated Prince Edward County High School 75-48 in the championship game. Park View defeated Cumberland 64-29 in the opening round to reach the tournament finals, while the Eagles cruised past Idea Charter School of Washington DC 73-35 in the opening round. Cumberland defeated Idea 50-40 in Saturday's consolation game.
Park View 64, Cumberland 29
Park View used a strong second and third quarter to pull away from the Dukes in the tournament opener on Friday night. The Dukes had difficulty handling the Dragons' full-court press, and fell behind for good in the second quarter. Park View led 53-26 at the end of the third quarter and held the Dukes to just three points (all by senior Bo Winbush) in the fourth. The Dukes were led in scoring by guard Dione Booker, who had nine points on the night.
Prince Edward 73, Idea 35
Prince Edward wasted no time in building an early advantage in its tournament opening game against Idea Charter School. The Eagles used a 20-0 run to quickly build a 25-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Idea tried to cut into the PE lead in the second quarter, but the Eagles were able to keep the Timber Wolves at a safe 20-point disadvantage. Four straight Idea points at the end of the quarter cut PE's lead to 38-19 at the break, but the Eagles pushed the lead to 24 points at 46-22 on a short jumper by Teequan Banks with 5:09 left in the third. That was the first of three consecutive baskets for Banks, who put the Eagles ahead 50-24 on a rebound and hook shot with a little over two minutes left.
Back-to-back three pointers by Vilontae Eanes and Amonte Vaughan gave PE a 56-28 advantage with a minute left in the third, and PE pulled away against a tiring Idea squad in the foruth.
Banks led the Eagles with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Eanes scored 12 on the night. Vaughan added 11 points and seven boards, while Dabney Malik chipped in ten points.
Cumberland 50, Idea 40
Cumberland rebounded from its Friday night loss with a ten-point victory over the Timberwolves in the consolation game.
The Dukes led 14-4 at the end of the first quarter and 24-15 at the halftime break. Cumberland maintained a comfortable double-digit lead for most of the game. A stickback by Harry Bailey gave the Dukes a 32-17 lead with 5:17 left in the third, but Idea was able to keep things relatively close. (No. 30) closed the third with four consecutive CHS points to help the Dukes to a 37-26 lead at the end of the third.
Idea slowly chipped into the Cumberland lead and pulled to within four points at 42-38 with three minutes left in the contest. A lay-up by (no. 20) broke a four minute CHS scoring drought and put the Dukes back on track. CHS closed the game on an 8-0 run to claim the ten-point victory.
“Late in the game, we kind of had a feeling of here we go again when Idea got close,” said CHS head coach Tyrone Mosby. “We had a lead like that at Central earlier in the week, before they went on a run and took the lead late. We weren't able to battle back for the win in that one, so we were a little anxious here.
“I would've liked to have had this win before we played that game. Maybe that would've made the difference. We're not consistent enough right now. Things come and go. We really need to work on being more consistent.”
Park View 75, Prince Edward 48
Park View jumped out to a 20-8 lead at the end of the first quarter in Saturday's championship game and had an answer for every challenge put up by Prince Edward.
The Eagles, who trailed the entire game, with the exception of the first basket, chipped away at the PV lead in the second quarter. A three-pointer by Dabney cut PV's advantage to 25-17 with 1:53 left in the half. He had another three pointer with 1:10 left that followed a Park View three, to make the game 28-20, but that was as close as the Eagles would get. PECHS trailed 34-22 at the break, and allowed a 10-2 run at the beginning of the third quarter to fall behind 44-24 with 4:45 left in the third.
Vaughan and Banks traded baskets with the Dragons for the balance of the third quarter, but the Eagles still trailed by 19 points at 57-38 at the end of the period.
A 12-2 run by the Dragons to start the fourth turned a comfortable PV lead into a blowout. The Dragons led 69-40 with 4:38 left and both teams played out the string with bench players for the remainder of the game.
Banks and Vaughan scored 13 points apiece, while Malik added nine. The Eagles struggled on the boards with only 23 team rebounds on the afternoon. Cleon Watkins led PE with six rebounds on the afternoon, while Banks and Vaughan pulled down five apiece.
Prince Edward was scheduled to travel to Powhatan on Wednesday night to wrap up its pre-Christmas schedule. Cumberland was scheduled to host Goochland on Tuesday night and will host Fluvanna on Wednesday.
