Civil War Conversation Set For Jan. 9

Published 2:30 pm Monday, December 31, 2012

On Wednesday, Jan. 9, 12:15 – 12:45 p.m., “The Emancipation Proclamation” is the topic of the Civil War Conversation to be held at Baine's books and Coffee, 205 Main Street, Appomattox. The “Conversations” are presented by the Museum of the Confederacy and the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. January's Speaker is Will Glasco, development officer at the Museum of the Confederacy.

On Jan. 1, 1863, the administration of President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The proclamation stated: “that all persons held as slaves” within the rebellious states “are, and henceforward shall be free.” The war in America took on a new meaning and opened the door for the enlistment of men of color into the Union army.

Join Glasco to learn about this widely known but little understood document. Seating is limited. Brown Bag Lunches are free. No RSVP is required.
