NOVEMBER 13 – After a long illness and being cared for by his loving family, Melvin L. Kestner Sr., 72, left Farmville to go to heaven and be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, November 8, 2012. He was born August 17, 1940 in Washington County to the late Hasque “Hack” and Mary Kestner. Mr. Kestner grew up in Portsmouth. He retired from Fresh Pride as a meat manager, where after retiring he missed the work and the people so much that he went back and worked right up until he became sick.
He is survived by his wife and best friend for many years, Betty Yeary and her son, Floyd W. Simpson III; his daughter, Mellanie Williams (Ralph) of Disputanta; son, Melvin “Sonny” Kestner of Roanoke; and his son, Mackenzie Hasque Kestner; sister, Varneda K. Meyer (Bart) of Lugoff, SC and numerous special nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda K. Russ and family friend, Albert Bass.
A graveside service was held at the Kestner Family Cemetery in Cumberland on Sunday, November 11.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 17, at 1 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church, 5501 Middle Road, Prince George, VA.
