MOW Volunteers At Annual Cookout

Celebrating its volunteers, the life blood of the organization, Meals on Wheels held the 12th Annual Volunteer Cookout on Sunday, Sept. 30. Some 93 attendees enjoyed great food, lively fellowship and a glorious sunny fall afternoon at Wilck's Lake Island.

MOW Board Chair Becky Kelly presented Dave Gibson, Operations Manager for CENTRA Nutrition Services, with the “Sponsor/Donor of the Year”. In addition to preparing top quality meals daily for Meals on Wheels (MOW) clients, CENTRA served as substitute driver; was the major financial contributor to the Farmville Wine Festival (FWF); participated as a vendor at the FWF; and donated food items on behalf of MOW to First Friday and the Annual Volunteer Cookout. Gibson and his staff continue to exceed all expectation in this long-standing partnership between CENTRA Southside Community Hospital and Meals on Wheels.

This year, the Board of Directors created its version of a hall of fame, “Founders & Friends”, to recognize those who have made valuable contributions to Meals on Wheels over its 11-year existence. This year's inaugural class includes: Martha Cleve-land, Nellie Coles, Hoke Currie, E.A. Mayo, Jim Ray, and Que Wilhelmi.

Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing and delivering balanced, nutritional meals to elderly, disabled and home-bound adults of Prince Edward County. CENTRA Southside Community Hospital prepares the meals, and dedicated volunteers provide meal delivery service Monday through Friday. A 16-member Board of Directors serves as the governing body.
