PRINCE EDWARD – Taikein Cooper has filed as an Independent to fill Prince Edward County Treasurer Mable Shanaberger's unexpired term. Cooper is a 2006 graduate of both Southside Virginia Community College and Prince Edward County High School. In 2010, he graduated from the University of North Carolina where he majored in Public Policy Analysis.
Cooper feels his experience and training in financial planning and compliance, governmental reporting, and maintaining financial records and collections has prepared him to serve as Prince Edward County's next Treasurer. He also believes his analytical, interpersonal, communicational, and presentational skills are all necessary when meeting the statutory compliance of the office of the County Treasurer.
Cooper stated in his release that he hopes to modernize the Treasurer's Office with his technological background and innovative ideas and notes that he has the ability to adapt and master new technology in a short period of time. This, he cited, will aid in providing timely and efficient reporting from the Treasurer's Office. He also believes his previous position, as a problem solver, provided him the opportunity to communicate with many individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Cooper says that Prince Edward County needs a Treasurer that will have the best interest of its citizens at heart.
“I not only have the skill set to deal with other elected officials, but I have the will to put policies and programs into place that will benefit every person in this county,” he said.
As Treasurer, Cooper said he will support increasing the number of payment installations to eliminate the burden of one payment during the holiday season of taxpayers and implementing outreach programs to teach fiscal responsibility and planning to taxpayers at no charge.
“I'm the most qualified candidate because I not only have the education and experience, but because I have the best interest of taxpayers at heart,” Cooper said. “I want what is best for Prince Edward County, and we need someone like me. I will bring the Treasurer's Office energy and an unparalleled focus to serve the community.”
Shanaberger plans to retire at the end of the year; a special election has been set for December 11.
