Marietta B. “Smiley” Chewning

SEPTEMBER 11 – Marietta B. “Smiley” Chewning went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 9, 2012.

She was valedictorian of both Buckingham Central High School, Class of 1942, and Johnston-Willis School of Nursing, Class of 1945. She served alongside the U.S. Army Nursing Cadet Corps during World War II. Ms. Chewning was a member of the Eastern Star and attended several churches during her life, including Salem Methodist Church, Tabernacle Baptist Church, Dillwyn Baptist Church and Enon Baptist Church. Her bright blue eyes welcomed all into her kind, loving heart. She was a friend to many, which earned her the nickname, Smiley. She loved cutting grass (10 acres!) and baking the best German chocolate cake (without coconut).

Ms. Chewning is survived by a daughter, Pat Frasher and partner, Mark Johnson; son, Hank Chewning and wife, Jeannine; grandchildren, Hayden Chewning, Melissa Ryman and husband, Gregg, and Mason Chewning IV and wife, Crystal; great-grandchildren, Bradley Ryman and Harper Chewning; and nephews, Bobby Bostain and wife, Gwen and Jack Bostain and wife, Kim. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mattie and Robert Baird; husband, Mason Chewning Jr.; sister, Ruth Bostain and husband, Eddie; favorite son-in-law, Ray Frasher; and her dogs, Speckles and Chrissy.

Visitation will be held at Bliley's-Staples Mill, on Wednesday, September 12 from 4 to 7 p.m. followed by an Eastern Star service.

Funeral service will be held graveside on Thursday, September 13 at 11 a.m. at Salem Methodist Church, Cumberland.
