Mary Poppins Concludes Outdoor Film Series
“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious.” The songs, the story, and the performers are all here in the movie that's delighted audiences for over 45 years! Downtown Film Series is proud to announce the final film of the 2012 season of Stars Under the Stars: Disney's Mary Poppins.
Released in 1964, Mary Poppins (Rated G) stars the incomparable Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke in the tale of a magical English nanny who blows in on the East Wind. A tea party on the ceiling and dancing on rooftops are just two of the adventures this mysterious nanny shares with the Banks children.
Mary Poppins was nominated for an incredible 13 Academy Awards and won five of them, including the Oscar for Best Actress for Julie Andrews, Best Music (Original Song), and Best Score. And speaking of the songs, this movie has no shortage of songs to get stuck in the viewer's head. It could be “A Spoonful of Sugar,” Van Dyke's “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” the frantic “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” or all of the above!
The presentation will begin at dusk, but come early for a “Spoonful of Sugar” race for the kids! Bring your blankets or bag chairs (umbrellas and bottomless carpetbags are optional) Friday, August 10, for Mary Poppins, the final film of the fifteenth season of the Stars Under The Stars series. The Downtown Crute Stage is located on the corner of Main and Fourth Streets in Farmville. In the event of rain, the film will be shown the following evening at dusk.
As part of the ongoing enhancements to the Crute Stage area, this year Downtown Film Series donated permanent outdoor speakers and associated audio/visual equipment. Donations previous years have included a backstage storage area, additional power and lights, and bathroom facilities.
Parking is available on Main Street and in the municipal parking lot behind the court house. Admission is free, and popcorn, candy, and drinks will be available for purchase. Please note, for the comfort and safety of all, there is a “No Pets” policy. For more information on the series, please visit: www.facebook.com/starsunderthestars
