CUMBERLAND – The request to move Cumberland County's District Three polling location has moved forward to the United States Department of Justice for pre-clearance.
The County's Board of Supervisors held a public hearing last week and now the request moves on to the Department of Justice's voting section for pre-clearance before the moving of the polling location in District Three is finalized.
After the public hearing, the Supervisors adopted a resolution concerning the relocation of the polling place.
The County Registrar, Marlene Watson, first presented the idea to the County's Supervisors during the budget process and subsequently was given the 'okay' from Cumberland's Electoral Board.
The current District Three voting location is at the Cumberland Volunteer Rescue Squad building and the proposed new location is one of the Southside Virginia Community College classrooms at the Community Center.
The new location would provide better heating, air conditioning, lighting, parking, and accessibility, according to the information provided.
The motion to adopt the resolution was made by Supervisor Kevin Ingle, who represents Cumberland's District Three.
