Man Is Fatally Shot

CUMBERLAND – Virginia State Police are assisting the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office with investigating a fatal police shooting Tuesday night, June 12, according to a press release issued.

The incident began at approximately 8:30 p.m. when the sheriff's office received a 911 call for shots being fired at a residence on Stoney Point Road in Cumberland Courthouse. When a deputy responded, police say, he was confronted by an armed individual. “The individual refused to comply with the deputy's commands to put down his handgun. The man was subsequently shot by the deputy,” states the release from the Virginia State Police.

The man, identified by police as Bennett Lee McKay Sr., 49, of Cumberland Courthouse, died at the scene. McKay's body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination and autopsy, states the release.

The deputy was not injured in the incident. In accordance with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office policy, the deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the ongoing investigation. The sheriff's office is not releasing the deputy's name at this time, the release stated.

At the request of the Cumberland County Sheriff, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's “Police Shooting Investigative Team” from the Appomattox Field Office is conducting the investigation into the incident.
