Editor, The Herald:
Many thanks to Cumberland's Patriot Day Committee for another year of hard work. Corrie Hurt, Barbara Gamage, and the Cumberland Ruritans are among those who put in countless hours each year.
The opening ceremonies and the reenactment of a truly historic event that took place here two hundred and thirty-six years ago provide an excellent history lesson.
As Noel Jones said in his speech on the Courthouse Lawn at our first Patriot Day in 2003, “You do not have to be a historian to get a chill down your spine to realize it was here that the first call for American Independence was made.”
We are reminded that without the events of April 22, 1776 we would celebrate no Fourth of July.
