Free Civil War Seminar Offered March 3 At Longwood

On Saturday, March 3, Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, Eastern National Bookstore, Department of History, Political Science, & Philosophy, and the Center for Southside Virginia History at Longwood University will host the 13th annual free Civil War Seminar at Jarman Auditorium on the Longwood University campus in Farmville. In keeping with sesquicentennial themes of the seminars from 2011 through 2015, this year's program will focus of the very active military year 1862. No registration is required and parking is available on campus.
The schedule for the day's events: 8:45 a.m. – doors open; 9:10 a.m. – introduction by Dr. David Coles, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of History, Political Science, and Philosophy, Longwood University; 9:15 a.m. John Quarstein: Richmond Saved: The 1862 Peninsula Campaign; 10:15 a.m. – John Hennessy: Second Manassas: Revisiting Return to Bull Run; 11:15 a.m. Thomas Clemens: General Ezra Carman and the Maryland Campaign of 1862; 12:30 p.m. – lunch; 1:45 p.m. – Thomas McGrath: Shepherdstown: Last Clash of the Maryland; Campaign,September 19-20, 1862; 2:45 p.m. – Frank O'Rielly: Fredericksburg: Winter War on the Rappahannock; 4 p.m. – Seminar ends.
During the seminar, there will be a major announcement by the National Park Service about a new opportunity to support the on-going needs of Appomattox Court House NHP, one of the nation's most recognized and important historic sites.
