Waterworks Players Spring Show Scheduled
Published 3:31 pm Tuesday, February 21, 2012
The Waterworks Players spring show is scheduled to be South Pacific, the beloved Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein musical. Due to the large cast and technical help, we are hosting a brief general interest meeting on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the production for anyone interested in participating.
Set on a remote island during World War II, South Pacific is actually the telling of two parallel love stories, both of which are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with an older French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island native. She struggles to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised and initially refuses Emile's proposal of marriage. At the same time, Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an innocent island girl with whom he's fallen in love out of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance for happiness.
There are both male and female singing lead parts, in addition to many chorus roles. In total a cast of about 20 singers and dancers is needed, ages 18 and up (roughly equal numbers of men and women). In addition, we need a number of stage hands to assist during technical week rehearsals and the four public performances.
