SOUTH CAROLINA, Feb. 2 – Rose E. Brown, 88, the loving wife of the late Harry J. “Hap” Brown and dear loving mother of Harry T. “Happy” Brown, Gerald L. “Jerry” Brown, and Jackie Brown, formerly of Lewiston, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2012 in Anderson, SC after a brief illness. Born in Keysville, the daughter of Simeon and Lottie (Reamer) Hines, her ancestors were one of the first 1200 families to settle in the Virginia Colony.

As a child Mrs. Brown lived in Meherrin in Prince Edward County and attended the Worsham School. Around 1935 she moved to Niagara Falls with her sister, the late Mary B. Jones, and attended 10th Street School and North Junior High School.

She married Harry J. Brown, of Lewiston, in Niagara Falls in 1942 and they were married for 67 years. During World War II, Mrs. Brown worked at the American Sales Book Company in Niagara Falls where she worked on the production of the World War II gas ration card books. She was especially fond of cooking and baking. While living in New York she enjoyed camping and being in the outdoors fishing and boating with her family on the Niagara River and on Kayuta Lake. Mrs. Brown resided in Lewiston on Mohawk Street and Fairchild Place before retiring with her husband to Kayuta Lake (Remsen NY) and Williamston, SC and Anderson, SC.

Mrs. Brown is survived by her children, Harry T. “Happy” Brown, (Anderson, SC), Gerald L. “Jerry” Brown (Utica, NY/Anderson, SC), and Jacqueline (Jackie) Brown-Royal and husband, Thomas Royal (Pelzer, SC); granddaughter, Susan Royal-Orsi and husband, Anthony Orsi (Loganville, GA); two twin great-grandsons, Cole Royal and Kyan Royal (Loganville, GA); sister, Emily Stephens (Suffolk) and many nieces and nephews residing in Prince Edward County and Richmond area. She was predeceased by siblings, Mary B. Jones (Niagara Falls, NY), Daisy Foster, Annie Anderson, Margaret Stephens, Maude Bray, Shad Hines, Samuel Hines, John H. Hines Sr., and Carrington Hines all from Southside.

Interment of cremains will be in the Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston, NY, at a future date to be determined. Flowers are gratefully declined by the family.
