Knights Run On Dukes

The Buckingham County High School boys basketball team avenged its earlier loss to Cumberland with an 89-76 victory over the Dukes on Tuesday night.

The Knights got off to a quick start and built a commanding lead early on. Junior guard Cam Johnson scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half as the Knights built a 45-26 lead at the intermission.

Cumberland battled back in the third. CHS senior guard Devonte Booker scored a pair of three pointers, but VaSaun Boatwright scored all ten of his points in the third period. By the end of the quarter, Cumberland had chopped into Buckingham's lead to make it a manageable 64-51 deficit heading into the final quarter.

Cumberland got as close as ten points in the fourth, but BCHS senior Tarian Ayers scored seven of his 21 points in the fourth, and Drequan Scott chipped in eight of his team-high 26 to maintain Buckingham's double-figure advantage.

Booker led the Dukes with a game-high of 27 points, while Rashawn Sims added 20 and Boatwright scored ten.

Scott lead the Knights with 26, while Ayers scored 21 and Johnson added 20. Tariq Bartee scored 13, and LA Briley added eight in the victory.

Cumberland was 1-6 (17 percent) from the foul line, while Buckingham was 19-27 (70 percent) from the stripe.

The Dukes combined to shoot nine three-pointers on the evening, compared to Buckingham's four.

Buckingham was scheduled to travel to Goochland on Friday night, while Cumberland will host Amelia on Friday.
