Martha Anderson Rollings, 82

DENDRON, Jan. 24 – Martha Anderson Rollings, 82, of Dendron, retired assistant superintendent of Surry, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2012. She was born in Andersonville, in Buckingham County, to the late Herbert Greenway and Alma Abernathy Anderson. She was the widow of Norman Gregory Rollings.

She graduated from Buckingham Central High School, entered State Teachers College (now Longwood University) at age 14, graduated with honors at age 18 and began her career in education which lasted 45 years. She taught at Culpeper High School, Wakefield High School, Waverly High School, Surry Academy (where she also served as headmistress), and at Surry County High School where she served as assistant principal, associate principal and at the central office as director of instruction and assistant superintendent for instruction. In 1994, she received an Alumni Achievement Award from Longwood University and in 2007, she was honored by the Surry County Business and Professional Women's Organization. In 2010, she was honored by the Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.

She served as treasurer of Dendron United Methodist Church for more than 35 years and also as Sunday School teacher and trustee; a charter member of the Dendron Historical Society; member, secretary, vice president and president of the Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International; member of APVA; and was active in other civic and community activities.

Mrs. Rollings is survived by a daughter, Faye Rollings-Carter and husband, Thornton; brother, Dr. Powell Anderson of Dillwyn; sister-in-law, Florence Anderson of Pomona, NY; two sisters-in-law, Carol C. Rollings and Clarice E. Rollings of Dendron; three step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Vida Abernathy Anderson and a brother, Charles A. Anderson.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 25, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wakefield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 26, at 2 p.m. at Dendron United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ray Rowland officiating. Burial will follow in Wakefield Cemetery.
