Dolores Darleane Gilliam Anderson

NEW CANTON, Jan. 24 – Dolores Darleane Gilliam Anderson, “Dee” or “Dee Dee”, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012. She was born April 1, 1940 in Richmond, the daughter of Gloria McCauley Gilliam of Richmond, and the late Paul Robert Gilliam. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Paul Robert Gilliam Jr.

During 1966 through 1968, she was a third grade teacher at the American Community School in Ethiopia, Africa, operated by the State Department, while there with her husband on Military assignment. She completed her requirements for a B.S. degree in Education at Virginia Commonwealth University and graduated with high honors. She began her teaching career stateside in Henrico County and completed the requirements for a Master's degree in Supervision and Administration in 1978 at Longwood College in Farmville. She left the classroom for Administration positions in Henrico County and after returning to Buckingham County to live, she became Administrator of Human Resources and Director of Elementary Education in the Central office of the Fluvanna County school system and retired in 1999.

Mrs. Anderson also served part-time as a Clinical Supervisor at Longwood College/University and served on Longwood's Board of Visitors during the Allen administration.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Harold K. Anderson II; two sons, Harold Kramer Anderson III (Andy) and Robert Alan Anderson (Deborah), all of New Canton; four grandsons, Joshua Kenneth Anderson and wife, Rachael, Paul Robert Anderson, Matthew Minter Anderson, and Harold Kramer Anderson IV; great-grandson, Christian Edward Anderson, and a special nephew, Dr. Paul “Trey” Robert Gilliam.

Mrs. Anderson was active in church throughout her adult life. She became an active member of Arvon Baptist Church after her move to Buckingham County. There she taught the Young Adult Class for several years and then taught the Senior Adult Class. She served in many church positions and was an ordained deacon.

She will always be remembered by family and friends as a loving, devoted, outstanding wife, and her exemplary love for her children, grandchildren, and first great-grandchild.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted Thursday, January 26, at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church cemetery, Rt. 610, 6277 Cartersville Rd., New Canton, with the Rev. Dr. Trey Gilliam officiating.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Arvon Baptist Church, 28350 N. James Madison Highway, New Canton, VA 23123.
