BUCKINGHAM – On Monday, January 16, at 6:30 p.m., at Cactus Jax Restaurant, the Buckingham Chamber of Commerce will host its Awards Banquet.
This annual event features the presentation of the Volunteer of the Year Award and the Buckingham Achievement Award.
A $10 per person charge may be paid at the door to assist with the cost of the dinner.
Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP to 983-2372 no later than 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 15.
On Sunday, January 15, at 3 p.m., First Liberty Baptist Church will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial Observance.
The Reverend Larry Smith, pastor of Rocky Mount Baptist Church in Cumberland, will be the guest speaker. He will be accompanied by the Rocky Mount Choir.
Based on Hebrews 10:23, this year's theme offers God's Promise Prevails, God Can Be Trusted To Keep His Promise.
After the service, the fellowship will continue with a meal.
Each year, First Liberty honors Dr. King by reaching out into the community and recognizing individuals, organizations, and agencies that are making a difference in the lives of others.
For instance, last year, First Liberty presented its Martin Luther King Service Award to Ellis Acres Memorial Park.
This year, First Liberty chose to reach out to youth. More specifically, First Liberty wanted to focus on area young people attending Buckingham County High School.
Knowing how families are struggling in these hard economic times, First Liberty felt the monetary donation that accompanies its service award would help with fees and supplies as well as motivational opportunities for BCHS students.
First Liberty has invited Roger Coleman, principal at BCHS, to accept the award on behalf of the school and its students.

On Saturday, January 14, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, David Wise, in cooperation with the Buckingham Office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension, is hosting a free Equine Seminar, at the Agricultural Center located on Route 60 next to the County Administration Complex.
Featured speakers will include Kelly B. LaPar, an attorney with Lenhart Obenshain PC, in Charlottesville; David Wise, Agribusiness and Farm Insurance Specialist; LaRue Sprouse Dowd, owner of Sprouses Corner Ranch, LLC, and president of Heartland Horse Heroes; Jennifer Ligon, Extension Agent-Agriculture and Natural Resources; and Kelly Jones Snoddy, Conservation Specialist with the Peter Francisco Soil and Water Conservation District.
Subjects covered will include the Virginia Equine Activity Liability Act; waivers, agreements, and the importance of getting it in writing; risk management and insurance planning for your farm or ranch; Heartland Horse Heroes and its therapeutic riding program; equine health and equine herpes virus-1 (EHV-1); and conservation practices and available technical assistance.

Straight Street-Buckingham, Inc. will host a mid-year school supply distribution on Saturday, January 14, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, at the Straight Street Building located on Route 20.
Basic school supplies will be distributed to those who need assistance. Persons interested in picking up supplies on Saturday are encouraged to contact Michelle at 983-1745. Please leave your name and a count of the number of children needing basic school supplies.
Beekeeping Workshop Series
Virginia Cooperative Extension is partnering with the Buckingham Bee Club to offer a four part series on Beginning Beekeeping.
The first informational hands-on program will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 7 p.m., at the Buckingham Extension Office.
Participants will learn about beginning beekeeping. The series will continue in February, March, and the final program in April.
At the April program, one starter beehive will be offered as a door prize. However, to qualify for the drawing, participants must attend at least three of the four classes.

The Home and Health Committee of the Woman's Club of Buckingham County has arranged for an informative program on Madeline's House at its January 19 meeting.
In an effort to share the word about Madeline's House, a safe house for victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault, the WCBC is opening its meeting to the public.
The meeting begins at 2 p.m. at the Buckingham Arts Center, located on Route 60 next to the County Administration Complex.
The Buckingham County Youth League operates a non-profit organization providing baseball, softball, cheerleading, football, and basketball programs throughout the year for children and youth ages four to 18.
This is an invitation for YOU to join this organization. The annual organizational meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 22, 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Dillwyn.

It's not too late to join with other volleyball players, ages 16 and up, on Monday nights at 6 p.m., in the gymnasium at the Nazarene Campground Gymnasium.
If interested in participating in Co-Ed Volleyball, call the Buckingham County Department of Recreation (434) 969-4242; or just show up on Monday night at 6 p.m. The program runs through February. The Nazarene Campground is located across from Buckingham Middle School on High School Road.
Straight Street―Buckingham wants to help you with your Christmas shopping. The non-profit, interdenominational organization, which works to provide Christ-centered activities for area youth, is offering Cats Meow wooden replicas of First Baptist Church, Dillwyn High School, Buckingham Farm Supply, Buckingham Central High School, and the Dillwyn Depot.
With the exception of the Dillwyn Depot, which is priced at $20, the replicas are $15 each and are available at Nancy's, located on Route 60 in Buckingham Court House.

If you are a parent of a student who plans to attend college in the fall, here's an opportunity you don't want to miss. Buckingham County High School is hosting Super Saturday on Saturday, February 11, at the Buckingham Career and Technical Education Center, formerly called the Vocational Center.
Super Saturday offers the general public one-on-one assistance with the FAFSA, Free Application for Federal and Student Aid.
Financial aid experts will be on site from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help families apply for funding for college.
