FARMVILLE – For the third consecutive year, Longwood University's Police Department is ranked among the top 500 security programs in the nation, according to Security Magazine. Longwood is ranked 17th out of the 31 schools in the education/university category and is the only university police department from Virginia that is recognized.

“It is the efforts of our sworn and non-sworn staff members that make this important achievement possible,” said Bob Beach, chief of the Longwood University Police Department. “Collectively, their efforts are non-ceasing, courageous, and devoted to the safety of Longwood University. In addition, our partnership with Jim White, director of Environmental Health, Safety and Emergency Management, and his staff has been a positive addition to the effort and success in keeping the Longwood community safe and prepared.”

Since first making the list of ranked schools in 2009 (Longwood was 24th out of 24 schools), the department has consistently improved, earning the 10th spot among 27 university police departments in 2010.
