BUCKINGHAM – From the lack of phone calls and emails that usually report local events and happenings, I've come to the conclusion that it's Long Winter's Nap Time.

Sure sounds good to me but the pile of things to do on my desk won't let it happen unless I decide to use the stack of notes, photos, and papers as a pillow.

So here's to enjoying that down time while you can because we all know we'll be back to our hectic schedules by mid-week.

Chamber Awards

It's the last call for nominations for the Chamber of Commerce's Volunteer of the Year Award and the Buckingham Achievement Award. Deadline for nominations is December 31.

To nominate a Buckingham resident for either of these distinguished awards, submit a one to two page letter explaining why your nominee is a good candidate for the respective designation.

Although the Volunteer of the Year is self-explanatory, the Achievement Award may need some clarification. This award honors someone who has contributed to this community over a period of years.

For those who are not comfortable with writing a letter of nomination, forms are available at Moss Motor. However, the letter is preferred because it usually offers more information about the nominee.

Mail your Nomination letters to Buckingham Chamber of Commerce, P. O. Box 951, Dillwyn, VA 23936; or fax them to (434)983-4891. Those making the nominations should include their contact information.

The Chamber presents the awards during its annual banquet in January.

Co-Ed Volleyball

It's not too late to join with other volleyball players, ages 16 and up, on Monday nights at 6 p.m., in the gymnasium at the Nazarene Campground Gymnasium.

If interested in participating in Co-Ed Volleyball, call the Buckingham County Department of Recreation (434) 969-4242; or just show up on Monday night at 6 p.m. The program runs through February. The Nazarene Campground is located across from Buckingham Middle School on High School Road.

The Cats Meow

Straight Street―Buckingham wants to help you with your Christmas shopping. The non-profit, interdenominational organization, which works to provide Christ-centered activities for area youth, is offering Cats Meow wooden replicas of First Baptist Church, Dillwyn High School, Buckingham Farm Supply, Buckingham Central High School, and the Dillwyn Depot.

With the exception of the Dillwyn Depot, which is priced at $20, the replicas are $15 each and are available at Nancy's, located on Route 60 in Buckingham Court House.

Proceeds will benefit the ongoing efforts of Straight Street. For more information, contact Kathy Ranson at 983-2403.
