Summer, though attired in autumn fancy dress, turned into winter overnight last week.

Yes, Virginia, there is Santa Claus weather.

On Thursday, temperatures skirted 80 degrees and, without the humidity of July, felt brilliant. On Friday we awoke at 5 a.m. to the overnight low of 46, which was also the daytime high. Residents in counties not far to the west of us confronted winter storm warnings, with predictions of four to six inches of snow and/or sleet. Saturday night dipped into the 20s. Frost everywhere.

Ho, ho, ho, yes.

Ho, ho-hum?

Never.

I am no expert on global warning-and a vast list of other subjects-but it is clear that global boredom will never be a weather pattern we grow accustomed to.

Tellingly, the summer-into-winter flip-flop shivered the timbers of Republicans, Democrats, Tea Partiers and Independents, alike.

We really are all in this together.

The weather forecasts that fact with accurate precision, for anyone paying attention.
