Falcons Down Ponies

The Fuqua School football team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 34-12 victory over Chincoteague last Friday night at Gilmer Stadium. Still, that may not be enough to get the Falcons into the playoffs, even with one more game to play against fellow playoff hopeful Norfolk Christian.
“We played better than we have at times this season,” said FS head coach Lewis “Skeeter” Fore. “Chincoteague may not be as good as some of the teams we've played, but they were ready to play us, and they showed it early.”
Chincoteague held a 6-0 lead on Fuqua early in the contest, before FS senior Charles Williams scored on a 66-yard touchdown run to give the Falcons the lead for good. Williams added another touchdown run later in the half, and Seth Jackson picked up a fumble around the Chincoteague ten-yard-line and returned it for a score to put Fuqua ahead 21-6 at the half.
“I told him that it's rare for a defensive lineman to score like that,” said Fore. “He could play the rest of his high school career, and not get another touchdown.”
Fuqua scored again in the second half on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Carter Cunningham to Antonio Gonzales, and Williams closed out Fuqua's scoring with a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown on an attempted screen pass.
Williams led the Falcons in rushing with 133 yards and two touchdowns on six carries, while Larry Haskins had 111 yards on 16 carries. Cunningham rushed three times for 22 yards and was 5-9 passing for 42 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Gonzales led Fuqua receivers with three catches for 36 yards and the touchdown.
Williams led Fuqua with ten tackles on the night (seven solo) and an interception return for a touchdown. Haskins had nine tackles (six solo). Cody Huddleston recorded an interception, and Davis Cyrus forced the fumble that was recovered by Jackson on his touchdown run.
Fuqua will host Hampton Christian on Friday night at 7 p.m.
