November 17 – On the morning show Good Morning America, they declared that we are on the “countdown to Thanksgiving”.
Thanks to the Beulah United Methodist Women's Annual Turkey Supper, we took our first step in that countdown last Saturday, Nov. 12. These ladies prepared a dinner that would put most restaurants to shame; turkey, dressing, gravy, sweet potatoes, green beans, homemade dinner rolls, and a selection of desserts that made it hard to pick just one.
The ladies of the Beulah United Methodist Women's Group would like to express their appreciation and thanks to the community for making this event such a success.
On Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 15, the Abilene Homemakers Club met at the Abilene Community Center to finish putting together 200 “goodie bags” for local nursing home residents. Each year we all save the Christmas cards that we receive. We then re-cycle them by cutting the front off and glue it to a little white bag which we then fill with candy and tie them with a red bow and deliver them in mid-December as little Christmas favors.
The Abilene Community Club is holding a Christmas gathering for the community on Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Abilene Community Center. The Mt. Nebo Choir and the Prodigal Sons Singers will be our guests for the evening. Light refreshments will be served. All are invited to attend.
The Abilene Community Club (ACC) is holding a “Beamer-ball” raffle. Raffle tickets for a football autographed by Coach Frank Beamer of Virginia Tech are available from any ACC member. The drawing will be held at a special meeting of the ACC on Dec. 21. You do not have to be present to win. What a great Christmas gift for some lucky person.
We are happy to report that Madeline Slaydon's brother, Norman Gryder of Holden Beach, NC, is doing very well following a recent illness and looking forward to an upcoming family reunion.
Birthday greetings are extended to Glenn Johnson who will celebrate on Nov. 20.
Sympathy is extended to the family of Marilyn Davis who passed away on Nov. 15.
Best wishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving! If you have any news or announcements that you would like to share, please call me at 223-2271 or e-mail me at kz5ro@kinex.net.
