William Meade McIlwaine, 82

OCTOBER 20 – William Meade McIlwaine, 82, professor emeritus of English at Randolph-Macon College, died on Friday, October 14, 2011.

He was born in Farmville in 1929, the son of the late Thomas Jones McIlwaine and Carrie Galusha McIlwaine.

He was predeceased by his brother, Parke Galusha McIlwaine; and is survived by a sister, Caroline McIlwaine Schutte, and his beloved nephew, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.

Dr. McIlwaine was a graduate of Farmville High School and Hampden-Sydney College and earned his master's degree in English from the University of Virginia. He taught and completed his coursework for his Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University. He also studied for a year at Cambridge University.

Mr. McIlwaine began teaching at Randolph-Macon College in 1955 and retired in 1994.

A memorial service was held at Duncan Memorial Methodist Church in Ashland on October 19.
