Barry and Linda Miles, of Cumberland, along with Elizabeth, Tina and Holly Cook, all of Powhatan, enjoyed an evening of food, fun and fellowship at a Farmville restaurant on Thursday, Oct. 20.

Sympathy is extended to the Godsey family of Dillwyn. Mattie Katherine Godsey, 89, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 18. A funeral service was held Oct. 20 at Rocky Mount United Methodist Church. She will be greatly missed by all.

Barbara Gray, of Cartersville, and her sister, Denise Anderson, of Colonial Beach, visited in the home of their mother, Elizabeth Stone, in Dillwyn last weekend. Everyone had a great time of fellowship.

The Five County Fair Association is proud to announce the winners of the talent show held on Thursday, Oct. 20. There were no participants in the petite youth category. The junior youth category ages 8-13 winners were: first place, Nicole Hanks, of Keysville; second place, Rebecca Branzelle, of Buckingham, and there was no third place contestant. In the senior youth category, ages 14-19, winners were: first place, Kelaiah Baggott and Hananyah Baggott, of Cartersville; second place went to the band “The Sounds of Anyone” from Hampden-Sydney; third place went to Katie Smith, of Farmville. In the adult category, 20 and older, first place went to Shaun Baggott, of Cartersville; second place went to Becky McCormick, of Appomattox; and third place went to Jessica Kidd, of Blackstone. Event directors Barry and Linda Miles, of Cumberland, would like to thank all who attended, contestants, judges and sound technician for making the 2011 talent show a success.

Our sympathy is extended to the Sledge family, of Buckingham. Raymond Arthur Sledge, 82, of Buckingham, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 22. A funeral service was held Oct. 26 in Farmville. He will be greatly missed by all.

The Miles family reunion was held on Saturday, Oct. 22, at noon at a restaurant in Richmond. A large crowd enjoyed great food and fellowship.

Pete and Annie May Miles, of Dillwyn, visited in the home of Ruby Connatser in Dillwyn on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 22.

Welcome home to Ruby Cogdill, of Cumberland, after spending a few days in the hospital. She is said to be doing well as of this writing.

The Arvonia Christian Fellowship Church, located north of Dillwyn on State Route 672 in Arvonia, will host special services on Saturday, Nov. 5. At 6 p.m., there will be a delicious covered dish meal followed by gospel music from church singers and musicians. All are cordially invited to attend.

The Buckingham County Christian Fellowship Association, a nonprofit organization, will hold their annual Thanksgiving banquet on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m. at the VFW Hall, located on US Route 60, Buckingham. All members are asked to attend and bring a covered dish. Meals, tea and coffee will be provided by the association. Maranatha Baptist Church, located on Tuggle Road in Farmville, will host a special pre-Thanksgiving Day celebration on Sunday, Nov. 13.

At 10:30 a.m., the day will begin with Bluegrass gospel music from the Sandy Creek Bluegrass Gospel Band, of Amelia. This will be followed by old fashioned preaching with a heart-felt soul-stirring message from God's holy word from church pastor, Steve Conwell. This will be followed by a Thanksgiving feast in the church fellowship hall. All are cordially invited to attend.
