BUCKINGHAM — For a total of 18 years, I. Monroe Snoddy has served on the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors; and, he wants to continue to do so.

Snoddy, who represents District 1, which now includes the New Canton and Georgia Creek precincts, is seeking re-election on November 8. However, he is being challenged by Robert C. “Bobby” Jones. Both are running as independents.

Snoddy offered, “I think my experience on the board enhances my role as supervisor by giving me a broader perspective on some of the issues needing to be improved in the County.”

Along with his tenures on the board of supervisors, Snoddy also served on the Buckingham County School Board for 12 years. Moreover, he chaired the board of supervisors for a total of five years and was vice chair for two years.

In his capacity as supervisor, Snoddy has served on numerous boards for area agencies and commissions including Crossroads Services, Piedmont Planning Commission, Social Services Board, and the Comprehensive Services Act Board.

Additionally, he volunteers to serve on the Advisory Committee for the Central Virginia Community Health Center.

Snoddy offered, “I sincerely believe that my experience in local government, serving on both the school board and board of supervisors, has given me a solid foundation on which to represent the people of District 1.”

He shared that he believes the most important issues facing Buckingham are financial in nature.

“The economy has declined and it's important that the county remain strong financially, which will be an issue with reassessment and the other demands being made of the county,” said Snoddy.

Looking over the past four years on the board of supervisors, Snoddy shared that his proudest accomplishments include Bear Garden, the Dominion Power Plant; the renovation of the Social Services/Health Department; the renovations of elementary schools; and the construction of the county administration building.

Snoddy explained that he would like to continue on the board to see the projects for the lower and upper elementary schools on Route 20, and the county administration facility brought to fruition.

He offered, “I think the Board has accomplished a lot in the last four years.”

Snoddy, a Buckingham native, was born in Arvonia and has lived there all of his life. After graduating from Richmond Barber School, he began a career as a barber. Fifty-two years later, he continues his trade.

Monroe and his wife Janie Nuckols Snoddy have been married for 49 years. They have three children and six grandchildren.

He is a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church where he has served as a deacon and on the finance committee. Snoddy is also a Mason.
