FARMVILLE – Prince Edward County and the Town of Farmville could have a valuable partner if a proposed regional water authority is created and pursues a pipeline from the Sandy River Reservoir.

A pipeline connected to the Town's water treatment plant would give the community a drought-proof supply of water.

Though outspokenly opposed to congressional earmarks, when asked by The Herald the Republican said he is otherwise ready to assist with federal funding opportunities that could help with the project.

“What I have said is that I am not in favor of earmarks. I think that that is part of that corrupt process that is what got us into this (budget deficit) jam we're in. But, with that said, to the extent that there are federal funds, grant opportunities, that exist I'm going to represent, I'm going to do my best to represent the people that I represent,” Rep. Hurt said in an interview with The Herald.

“And to the extent there are those opportunities, we will assist and support those things that we can, to help (the project) out,” the congressman said.

Rep. Hurt said he has not been approached by local officials about the possibility of federal funds for the project.

Negotiation discussions between Town and County representatives concerning creation of a regional water authority are ongoing and said to be making progress.

If a pipeline is constructed, upgrades would also need to be made in the Town's water treatment plant.
