E-Trailer Recycles Hi-Techs

BUCKINGHAM ― When computers crash and other electronic equipment is ready for the trash, Buckingham residents now have a secure place to drop them off for recycling-the E-Trailer.

The trailer is stationed at the county's solid waste and recycling center at 434 Wingo Road, just off Route 15, south of Dillwyn.

Items accepted for recycling include computers, monitors, hard drives, modems, plug and play devices, printers, scanners, and copiers. Additionally, the list includes telephone equipment, fax machines, power backups and transformers, wires, cables, circuit boards, and miscellaneous electronic business equipment.

Likewise, the E-Trailer is the place to deposit DVD players, VCR's, miscellaneous home entertainment equipment, microwave ovens, and small electronic household appliances.

Although the E-Trailer has been at the site for about a year, the county's solid waste and recycling supervisor, Carolyn Amos said there has been some confusion about its use.

She explained that the E-Trailer is open when one of the solid waste department's employees is monitoring the site.

“It is kept locked when the monitors are not there,” said Amos, adding that the E-Trailer is open from 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; and from 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

According to Amos, the company that recycles the electronic equipment cleans the computer hard-drives for security purposes when the trailer is pulled. Subsequently, to prevent access to information stored on the hard-drives, the E-Trailer is kept locked when the county employees are not monitoring the site.

However, Amos advised that residents may drop-off other electronic items when the trailer is locked by placing them on the steps of the trailer. She added that the site also accepts cell phones.

While sharing information about the E-Trailer, Amos reminded that the county's solid waste department recycles aluminum, appliances, cardboard, electronics, glass, metal, and paper.

She added that J&J Recycling comes to the Wingo Road site to buy aluminum cans every other month-January, March, May, July, September, and November-on the third Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“I would like to let residents to know how much the solid waste workers and I appreciate the help they give in putting the objects in the right containers,” shared Amos. She added a special thank-you to those who pick up trash they see lying on the ground at the sites.

Amos encouraged anyone with questions about the E-Trailer or the county's other recycling efforts, to call her at (434)969-4242. She noted that information is also available on the county's website or by emailing her at camos@buckinghamcounty.virginia.gov.
