September rainfall set a record in Farmville, the 8.89 inches of rain topping the previous high-water mark of 8.35 inches that fell in 1975, reports WFLO, the National Weather Service's Cooperative Observer.

Over four inches of that total came on one memorably water-logged day, but a drop of rain is a drop of rain and the drops that came our way last month have turned the 2011 precipitation deficit into a surplus of more than an inch.

In everyone's life a little rain must fall-except during drought, though a drought becomes its own kind of dry flood-and sometimes a little rain is all we get, or less. Continued progress in talks between Prince Edward County and the Town of Farmville on establishing a regional water authority, therefore, is a very good thing.
