Over 200 students and residents of Farmville and surrounding areas recently joined the Alzheimer's Association's Walk to End Alzheimer's and united in a movement to reclaim the future for millions at Longwood University. Participants raised more than $6,500 to fund Alzheimer's care, support and research programs. Their goal was $2,322.

“The students from Longwood University united with local professionals and residents of the Farmville area to express their support in the Walk to End Alzheimer's,” said Carol Gurioli, Family Program Manager for the Alzheimer's Association South-eastern Virginia Chapter. “The participants understand that their fundraising, awareness raising and advocacy help to fuel the mission of the Alzheimer's Association. With funds raised from the walks across the Chapter's area, the Alzheimer's Associa-tion is able to provide much needed care and support to people affected by the disease as well as fund critically needed Alz-heimer's research.”

The Delta Nu chapter of Sigma Kappa Sorority plans and implements the walk annually along with the Alzheimer's Associa-tion as part of Longwood University's Oktoberfest. It took place on Sept. 29.

Alzheimer's disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation's sixth-leading cause of death.
