Shake – Rattle and Roll, is what was happening in the Tuggle area on Tuesday afternoon around 1:51 p.m.; this was not coming from so many people coming to the polls to vote but from a 5.8-magnitude earthquake, which turned what had been a very quiet, slow day at the polls into an exciting afternoon. Buildings were shaking, bricks were coming off chimneys, pictures were leaving the walls, cats and dogs were hiding, people were evacuating buildings and I don't know what else. The quake is something that we will talk about for years to come.

The place to be this Friday and Saturday is Prospect. On Friday afternoon at 7 p.m. there will be a walk/talk along the High Bridge Trail at Prospect. Bob Flippen and members of the Prospect Historical Society will be talking about Prospect in the past and today and some memories.

…chestnuts roasting on an open fire…no… that's not it…meatloaf roasting in the convection oven, mashed potatoes being whipped, yeast rolls rising while green beans and apples simmer, and desserts galore, I can't see the table anymore…it's the Meatloaf Supper at the Prospect Firehouse this Saturday, Aug. 27. We hope to see you there between 5-7 p.m. – just a donation at the door is all we ask, nothing more. And no matter the weather, it's going to be a “good night, Irene.” I borrowed this from Phyllis Mason's facebook page, just too good not to use.

The Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors will hold a Memorial Service for those who have lost their lives in the line of duty from Prince Edward County at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11, on the 3rd floor of the Court House

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kelsey report their granddaughter, Abby Kelsey, has entered Longwood University. What an exciting time this is!

On Monday Emma Jean Sharpe and her four year old son, Jeffrey, had an enjoyable visit with her mother, Pat Smith.

Pat Smith met Brenda Walton of Powhatan for breakfast in Cumberland on Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Long from the Tidewater area visited Mr. and Mrs. Lindy (Wanda) over the weekend.

On Thursday evening Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Smith (Pat) and Mr. and Mrs. John Utzinger (Rita) had dinner at the Babcock House in Appomattox.

Peggy Kelsey and her twin sister, Polly Duncan, visited with Phyllis Towler at the Moore Center this past Monday.

Flora Bolt enjoyed lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Dale (Judy) Bolt on Sunday. Also attending were Jennifer Paige Bolt, Chris Bolt and Page Johnson. Later on Sunday afternoon Flora visited Cindy Hedrick in Rice.

Flora Bolt attended the birthday celebration of Ruth K. Simpson on Saturday.

The Special Blessings organization of Glenn Memorial Baptist Church at Prospect met on Monday. They made a large blanket and quite a few smaller ones. Those helping with this project were Shirley Fulcher, Shirley Mottley, Evelyn Shelton, Jeannette Tarlton and Pat Foster.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kelsey attended the birthday celebration of his sister, Ruth K. Simpson on Saturday afternoon.

The family of Ruth Kelsey Simpson hosted a birthday celebration in honor of her 97th birthday on her birthday Aug. 20 at the Appomattox P.E. Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. There were 76 family and friends in attendance. Everyone from the youngest, Sage Simpson age 2 to the oldest, the honoree enjoyed themselves.

Family, friends and neighbors are sending special get well wishes to all those who are sick at this time; Elton Franklin.
