TENNESSEE, Aug. 9 – Lynnette H. Walker, 88, died Saturday, July 30, 2011 in Memphis, Tennessee. She passed away peacefully with her family present. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Dr. William G. Walker.

Mrs. Walker was the older of two children born in Charlotte, N.C. to Letherine Ferguson and June Jefferson Honeycutt. She grew up in Cumberland County and earned a bachelor's degree in music education from Longwood College in Farmville. For 48 years she taught music and American history in schools in Charlestown, Ind., Lebanon, Tenn., and at Daviess County High School in Owensboro, Ky.

For over 65 years she was an active leader in local civic groups and Presbyterian churches where her husband pastored in Lexington, Ky., Lebanon, Tenn., and Owensboro, Ky. Following the death of her husband, she moved to Memphis with her daughter, the Rev. Dr. Gayle Walker, who serves as associate pastor at Idlewild Presbyterian Church, where Mrs. Walker was active until her death, serving in Presbyterian Women and helping in congregational care.

She nurtured deep friendships through her attentive listening to people and her handwritten letters. She had a gift of knowing when people were hurting and what to say, and she remembered things about people's lives to ask about them later. Mrs. Walker was loved for her humor and wit, especially her funny stories. With her outgoing personality, she was always ready to share a meal with a friend.

She is survived by her children, Gayle and husband, David Marshall Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., and William G. Walker Jr. and wife, Kim, and their sons, Benjamin and Ryan of Cedar Park, Texas; sister, Lois DeAngelis of Tampa, Fla.; nine nieces and nephews; and many longtime and cherished friends.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory, Owensboro, with memorial services at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at First Presbyterian Church, Owensboro. Private burial will be in the Owensboro Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will also be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, at Idlewild Presbyterian Church, Memphis.
