BUCKINGHAM ― The American Cancer Society and James River State Park, in conjunction with Buckingham's Relay for Life, invite the community to a tree dedication ceremony honoring cancer survivors on Saturday, August 20, at 9 a.m.

Not only will you be able to celebrate more birthdays with the American Cancer Society but you will also be able to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Virginia State Parks.

The tree dedication celebrates life, survivorship and new beginnings with the ultimate symbol of health-trees.

So, bring you friends and family and join with others at James River State Park for the dedication ceremony. And, while you're there, you might as well take a hike in the park or at least a walk along the James.

Homecoming at Salem UMC

Salem United Methodist Church is celebrating Homecoming on Sunday, August 21.

This great day of worship and fellowship begins with Sunday School at 10 a.m., and worship at 11:15. Pastor Billy Swan will lead the service with special music by Susanne Huddleston.

After worshiping together, it will be time to enjoy the homecoming dinner-that joyous time of delicious food and great fellowship.

Salem will host revival services beginning on Monday, August 22 through Thursday, August 25, at 7 p.m. each evening.

On Monday night, the Reverend Allen Murphy will be in the pulpit with special music by Browns Chapel UMC.

Tuesday night's service will feature the Reverend Jimmy Dunn. The choir from Bethlehem Baptist Church will be singing.

The Reverend Brant Hays will be the featured speaker on Wednesday night with music by the Cedar Baptist Choir.

Thursday's service will feature the Reverend John Flood in the pulpit and music by Dallas Jent and the Salem Angels.

On Thursday evening, at the conclusion of the revival, a fellowship reception is planned.

Pastor Billy Swan and the members of Salem UMC extend an invitation to join with them for both Homecoming and Revival. “Come and visit old friends and members,” shared a spokesperson.

Hunter Education

For those who registered for the Hunter Education course offering a combination of online and classroom instruction, the classroom instruction will be held at the Agricultural Center on Saturday, August 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please note that students under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Prior to the August 20 class, participants must successfully complete the online course quizzes offered in the Introduction to Hunter Education course at http://homestudy.ihea.com/index.htm.

The completed quizzes must be printed-out and brought to the August 20 session, which will include hands-on activities and a written test. At the end of the session, cards and certificates will be awarded.

BCPS Open House

On Thursday, August 25, students enrolled in Buckingham County Public Schools will be returning to school.

To help prepare the students and their parents for a new school year, the schools are hosting open houses on Tuesday, August 23.

Open house for Buckingham Primary, Dillwyn Primary, and Gold Hill Elementary schools, will be held on Tuesday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m.

Due to the on-going renovation and expansion project at Dillwyn Elementary School, those fourth graders should go to the open houses at the respective schools they will be attending-either Buckingham Primary or Dillwyn Primary.

DES fifth graders will attend open house from 5 to 7 p.m. at Buckingham County Middle School, which is were they will be attending.

Sixth grade orientation for Buckingham County Middle School students will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Open house for BCMS seventh and eighth graders will be held from 5 to 7 p.m.

Ninth grade orientation for Buckingham County High School students will be at 1 p.m. For students in grades 10, 11, and 12, open house will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Trinity UMC Homecoming And Revival

Trinity United Methodist Church is celebrating Homecoming on Sunday, August 28, beginning at 11 a.m. with the morning worship service.

Revival services are planned for Monday, August 29 through Wednesday, August 31, with services at 7:30 each evening. On Monday, the church's pastor the Reverend Donald Moore will be the featured speaker. The Reverend John Flood will be the guest speaker on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Special music will be included in each service; and, Tuesday night's service will feature music by Cody Moss.

Following the Wednesday night service, there will be a fellowship hour with refreshments.

All are invited. Trinity UMC is located on Route 60 in Buckingham Court House.

Homecoming Weekend at Hatcher Baptist

Hatcher Baptist Church invites everyone to join with them on August 26, 27, and 28 for Homecoming Weekend.

On Friday, August 26, and Saturday, August 27, services will begin at 7:30 each evening. Guest speaker will be Dr. Kenneth Cloud, the father of the church's pastor, Cameron Cloud.

Each evening will include music by the Cloud Family.

On Sunday, August 28, the worship service will begin at 10:30 a.m. with music by the Daybreak Quartet.

Dr. Cloud will be the featured speaker, joining his son at the pulpit.

Following worship, the traditional homecoming luncheon with all the delicious food and great fellowship will be shared.

Hatcher Baptist Church is located at the intersection of Gravel Hill Road, Route 617, and Trents Mill Road, Route 622.

Come Home to Enon

Enon Baptist Church is celebrating Homecoming on Sunday, August 28. The day begins with worship service at 12:15.

Lee Davis, of Cedar Baptist Church, will lead the service; and Charlie Shumaker will be the guest speaker.

After worship, the always-delicious homecoming luncheon will be shared in the midst of loads of fellowship and friendship.

Homecoming ushers in three nights of revival for Enon. Each night of revival will begin with special music at 7:15, and services at 7:30.

On Monday, August 29, the Reverend Lewis Brandt will be in the pulpit; and, music will feature the Salem UMC Choir.

Tuesday night, August 30, will feature music by Amanda Duncan; and the Reverend George Woods will be preaching.

On Wednesday, August 31, Pastor Wayne Tyree of Mt. Zion Baptist Church will be in the pulpit; and the choir from Mt. Zion will be singing.

The Enon Baptist Church family extends a heartfelt welcome to everyone to join with them for the joys of Homecoming and the renewal of Revival. Enon Baptist Church is located on Route 640, Andersonville Road.

Ballroom and Latin Dance Classes for Adults

Do you wanna dance? Instructor Sandra Magialetti is ready, willing, and definitely able to provide an introduction of five different types of Ballroom and Latin Dances.

Participants will learn about four different steps to each dance. Dances covered may include Waltz, Rumba, Cha-Cha, West Coast Swing, and Salsa/Mambo.

Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m., in the concourse at Buckingham County High School. The course runs from September 6 through November 8. Cost is $40.

Co-Ed Volleyball for Ages 16 and Over

How about Co-Ed Volleyball? Anyone 16 years old and over who is interested in playing open gym Co-Ed Volleyball this fall is encouraged to contact Todd Shumaker, Buckingham's recreation director, at 969-4242.

Youth Co-Ed Soccer

Registration is on going for the Youth Co-Ed Soccer Program.

Registration fee for four and five-year-olds is $35 before September 1 and $40 after that date.

Registration for ages six through 17 is $40 before August 18 and $45 after that date.

Coaches for the Co-ed Youth Soccer are needed for the Fall 2011 season. No experience is required; and, help and advice are readily available.
