BUCKINGHAM ― On Saturday, July 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Buckingham will celebrate its third annual Cowboy Day. Held in conjunction with the National Day of the Cowboy, this fun-filled event takes place at the Historic Village at Lee Wayside. Admission is $3 for children and $5 for adults.
Free parking and continuous shuttle bus service will be available at nearby Buckingham County High School.
Throughout the day, the Tom Mix Rangers, Sprouse's Corner Ranch, Old Dominion Fast Draw Club, and lots of cowboys and cowgirls will be providing mock gunfights and Old West activities for kids of all ages.
Cowboy Day will also offer live music, demonstrations and exhibits featuring panning for gold, blacksmithing, and an authentic chuck wagon.
At the Kids Corral, there will be activities for the youngest cowboys and cowgirls. Tom Mix Rangers will be offering horse and pony rides for children and youth. And, western themed arts and crafts will be available.
The schedule of events includes Central Virginia Blue, a local bluegrass band, performing from 9 a.m. to 10.
At 10 a.m., the Cowboy Day Parade, led by the Tredegar Brass Band will usher in all the cowboys, cowgirls, and special guests.
James Drury, The Virginian, will be the parade grand marshal and featured guest star.
Drury played the nameless hero from Virginia on the series, which ran from 1962 through 1971. Also in the line-up of special guests is Randy Boone, who played Randy Benton on the series from 1964 to 1966.
The parade will enter the Historic Village at its main gate and circle through the park.
From 10:30 to 11, the Tredegar Brass Band will perform. When the music stops, the Paso del Norte Pistoleros will take the spotlight for the first mock gunfight.
From 11:15 to 11:45, Roy “Spotted Eagle” Glass, a Grammy nominated Native American Flutist, will perform. Music will continue to flow with the light rock band Point Judith performing from 11:45 to 12:45.
Cowboys and cowgirls of all ages will want to be on hand at 12:45 to view the Tom Mix Rangers in a mock gunfight.
Then, from 1 to 1:30 p.m., Native American Dancers from Silverheels House of Nations Ministry will perform. They are accompanying Chief Steve Silverheels, son of Jay “Tonto” Silverheels from the Lone Ranger television series.
Randy Boone, who starred in The Virginian, will take the stage from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m.
At 2:15, it'll be time for another gunfight, this time featuring the Paso del Norte Pistoleros.
When the smoke clears, Herb Jefferies look-a-like Boyd Anderson will take center stage from 3 to 3:45 p.m., portraying the Singing Cowboy.
Tom Mix Rangers will close out the day with another mock gunfight, scheduled for 3:45 to 4 p.m.
Hosted by Historic Buckingham, Inc., Buckingham Chamber of Commerce, the Tom Mix Rangers, and Sprouse's Corner Ranch, Buckingham's Celebration of the National Day of the Cowboy offers a great day for cowboys and cowgirls of all ages. And, it's a fundraiser for the Historic Village.
So round'em up and head out to the Historic Village at Lee Wayside on Saturday, July 23. And, don't forget to wear your cowboy hat.

The Buckingham County Public Library continues its summer reading program, One World, Many Stories each Thursday with pre-K children at 10:30 a.m. and elementary and middle school students at 2 p.m.
In celebration and preparation of Cowboy Day on Saturday, the library will feature special Cowboy Day crafts for younger visitors on Friday, July 22. Children will have the opportunity to make bandanas, cowboy hats, and mustaches so that they'll be appropriately outfitted on Cowboy Day.
Chestnut Grove Baptist Church will celebrate Homecoming this Sunday, July 24. The Reverend Tommy Armstrong, of Cedar Baptist Church, will be the guest speaker for the 11 a.m. worship service.
After the service, the treasured tradition of sharing a covered dish meal will offer great food and the cherished fellowship of coming home.
Homecoming ushers in four nights of revival beginning on Sunday, July 24, through Wednesday, July 27. Dr. Carl Deiner, of Liberty University, will be the guest speaker for revival. Services will begin with each evening at 7 p.m. with special music.
Pastor Brad Childres and the Chestnut Grove family invite everyone to the join with them for the special celebration of Homecoming and the renewal of Revival.
Chestnut Grove Baptist Church is located on Chestnut Grove Road, Route 612, off Francisco Road, Rt. 636.
Browns Chapel United Methodist Church will celebrate Homecoming on Sunday, July 24, beginning at 10 a.m. with music by Smokey Wilson, followed by the homecoming worship service at 11:15. After the service, the traditional Homecoming dinner will be shared.
Homecoming launches a week of revival, with services Monday, July 25 through Friday, July 29, at 7 p.m. each evening. The Reverend Robert Woodfin will be the guest speaker for revival.
Each night of revival will feature special music. On Monday, the Ownby Trio will be singing; Tuesday will feature music by Red Clay; and, on Wednesday, Shelby Taylor and Alexandra Carney will be singing. The choir of Cedar Baptist Church will be singing on Thursday; and on Friday, music will be by Second Time Around.
After the revival service on Friday, a watermelon feast is planned.

There's still time for area youth to take advantage of some of the great opportunities available through the 4-H.

4-H Fishing Clinic: On July 26 and 27, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, area youth ages nine and up have the opportunity to participate in a 4-H Fishing Clinic at Horsepen Lake Wildlife Area.
A local pro-angler who fishes tournament trails as a hobby will be the instructor. Participants will learn fishing skills, knot tying techniques, and about fishing equipment. Fee is $10.
Youth will need to bring a fishing pole and tackle box. They will also need to bring a packed lunch on the first day. A cookout is planned for the second day of the clinic.
Cloverbud Summer Sensation offers a week of day camp at Buckingham Agricultural Center for youth ages five through eight from July 25 through 28, 8 a.m. to 4:30 each day. Fun in Nature is the theme for this camp. Campers will learn about nature while enjoying crafts, games, and field trips, which include Maymont Park, Bear Creek Lake State Park, and a third field trip with a surprise destination. Cost is $40. Again, participants need to bring their lunch and a bottle of water.
Summer Sensation for ages nine through 13 will be held at the Agricultural Center, August 1 through 4, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. This day camp will focus on digital photography and will include trips to James River State Park, Lewis Ginter Gardens, Holiday Lake State Park, and points of interest in Buckingham County. Cost is $40 and participants must provide their lunch and a bottle of water.
If you haven't picked up a copy of the Buckingham County Recreation Summer Programs 2011 booklet, you'll want to stop by the county administration office to get a copy because it's chockfull of things to do this summer. For more information and/or registration, call 969-4242.
Quick Start Tennis: Children ages 6 to 11 are eligible for the Quick Start Tennis program developed by the United States Tennis Association. Designed to introduce tennis to youth at an early age, the program utilizes child-friendly equipment and techniques so that the kids learn while having fun playing tennis.
Although the first clinic was held recently, a second clinic is scheduled for August 1 through 5. Classes are held from 6 to 7 p.m. each evening at Ellis Acres Memorial Park. Deadline for Registration is July 29. Cost is $20.
Woman's Softball League: Anyone interested in putting a team in the woman's softball league, for ages 16 and up, is asked to contact Todd Shumaker, 434 969-4242 by the end of this week.
Youth Football Sign-Up: Registration for youth ages five to 13 (age as of September 1) will be held on July 25, 26, and 27, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., on the track of the athletic field at Buckingham County High School. First day of practice is July 25; and last day to register is July 29.
Buckingham Fundamental Free Football Camp for ages seven to 18 will be held at Buckingham County High School from July 25, 26, and 27, from 6:30 to 8 each evening.
Girls Tennis Clinic: Girls ages eight to 18 have the opportunity to participate in a tennis clinic on August 1 through 4, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. each evening at Buckingham County High School. The clinic, instructed by Erin Lake, is for beginners and intermediate level players. Cost is $20.
Co-Ed Soccer Sign-Ups: Registration for the youth soccer program will be held at the field behind Dillwyn Primary School on August 1, 2, 3, 4, and 18; from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $40. The season begins on August 9.
Coaches are needed for this program. Adults who would like to coach or help coach are asked to contact Todd Shumaker at 969-4242.
Swimming Lessons: Due to the demand for swimming lessons for ages three through 12, a third session is planned for August 4 through 6, at the Nazarene Camp. However, specifics as far as class schedules and cost will be finalized once the interest level is determined. If you are interested in registering your child for swimming lessons, please contact the Department of Recreation by the afternoon of July 25.

On Saturday, July 30, the BEE Team of Dillwyn Primary School is sponsoring its first annual FIELD FEST, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Buckingham County Middle School.
This summertime festival offers food, games and activities, bounce houses, a dunking booth, music, prizes, and a book fair.
Admission is free, however most activities will require tickets that can be purchased at the gate.
For those who aren't familiar with the 21st Community Learning Center is all about-it's an after-school and summer programs for students in Project Four through third grade. The Learning Center provides remediation, enrichment, and recreation activities for students; and, also hosts workshops for parents.
Thanks to a dedicated staff, the young students are afforded opportunities to learn in a creative and caring environment while having a great time.
ALL proceeds from Field Fest will benefit Dillwyn Primary's 21st Century Community Learning Center-a cause definitely worthy of our support.
In Virginia, Hunter Education is mandatory for 12 to 15 year olds and all first time hunters 16 years of age and older.
An upcoming Hunter Education course offers a combination of online and classroom instruction, allowing participants to do their homework at their convenience.
The classroom instruction will be held at the Agricultural Center on Saturday, August 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please note that students under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
Prior to the August 20 class, participants must successfully complete the online course quizzes offered in the Introduction to Hunter Education course at http://homestudy.ihea.com/index.htm.
The completed quizzes must be printed-out and brought to the August 20 session, which will include hands-on activities and a written test. At the end of the session, cards and certificates will be awarded.
Although the course is free, pre-registration is required. Go to www.huntfishva.com, and navigate through education, hunter education, and class locator to register.
