BUCKINGHAM ― Thanks to the Buckingham County Arts Council, next week area youth ages nine through 14 will have an amazing opportunity to explore the arts.
Summer Arts Camp will be held Monday, July 11 through Friday, July 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, at the Buckingham Arts Center.
Classes include choral instruction with Melody Parson Day; creative dance with Sakina Sawtelle; drama with John Ramsay; photography by Becky Lutz; creative writing with Michelle Wright; violin by Lindsay Absher; clay modeling with Irving Poole; pastels with Julie Shield; tie-dying with Sharon Andrews; acrylic painting with Leah Olivier; and pottery.
Cost is $45. However, there is a $5 discount for BCAC members or for multiple children from the same family. Please note that participants are responsible for bringing their lunch each day.

The Buckingham Arts Center is located on Route 60 near the county administration complex.
Friends of Bill Anderson, who is battling cancer, want to honor him and let him know they are with him all the way. Knowing how much Bill enjoys riding on his Harley, what better way to honor him than with a motorcycle ride, especially one benefiting cancer research.
The ride is scheduled for Saturday, July 9, at the Dillwyn Firehouse. Registration will begin at 11 a.m., with bikes out at 12 noon. Plans include a ride-by past Bill's residence.

And, if you don't have a motor cycle for the ride; or, if you're dreaming of a Harley, it's not too late to get a ticket for the Dillwyn Volunteer Fire Department's raffle for a Harley Davidson 2011 FXDC Super Glide Custom. The drawing will be held on Saturday, July 9, at 11 a.m.
Tickets are $100 but only 300 are being sold so your odds are pretty darn good-if you get a ticket. And, that $100-it goes to a darn good cause-the Dillwyn Volunteer Fire Department.
Please note that if less than 200 tickets are sold, proceeds will be drawn as a 50/50.
Tickets are available from any Dillwyn firefighter or at Moss Motors.
Buckingham Baptist Church will celebrate Homecoming on Sunday, July 10, beginning at 11 a.m.
The church's new pastor, Doug Adams, will be leading the morning worship service; and, the Coachmen Quartet will be providing the music.
Following worship, the traditional and always enjoyable covered dish meal will be shared.
After lunch, at 1:15 p.m., the Coachmen will perform in concert. This family-based quartet from the Shenandoah Valley sings a variety of songs including southern gospel, country, and middle- of- the-road music.
“Our mission is simple but important-to provide audiences with uplifting, family-oriented music and entertainment. It is with honor and dignity that we dedicate our lives to this mission,” offered the quartet.
The Coachmen Quartet includes Bob Campbell, bass; Pete Campbell, lead; Chris Campbell, baritone; and John Lane, tenor.
Everyone is invited to the joyous celebration of coming home to Buckingham Baptist and join with the congregation as they officially welcome Pastor Doug Adams, his wife Susan and their family.
Buckingham Baptist is located on Route 15 near Gold Hill.
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Dillwyn on Wednesday, July 13, from 12 noon to 6 p.m., at First Baptist Church, located on Route 15, at 16980 Oak Street. Please note the change in location.
This bloodmobile visit is being sponsored by the Buckingham County Ruritan Club. And, word has it that the Ruritans will be grilling up hot dogs with all the fixings.

Here's a run down on some of the great opportunities available to area youth this summer through the 4-H.

Cloverbud Summer Sensation offers a week of day camp at Buckingham Agricultural Center for youth ages five through eight from July 25 through 28, 8 a.m. to 4:30 each day. Fun in Nature is the theme for this camp. Campers will learn about nature while enjoying crafts, games, and field trips, which include Maymont Park, Bear Creek Lake State Park, and a third field trip with a surprise destination. Cost is $40. Again, participants need to bring their lunch and a bottle of water.
Summer Sensation for ages nine through 13 will be held at the Agricultural Center, August 1 through 4, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. This day camp will focus on digital photography and will include trips to James River State Park, Lewis Ginter Gardens, Holiday Lake State Park, and points of interest in Buckingham County. Cost is $40 and participants must provide their lunch and a bottle of water.
Horse Camp offers a daylong session on Basic Horsemanship for ages nine through 13. Hosted at Eureka Knoll Farm in the Curdsville area, the camp will be held on July 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $15 and includes lunch and a pool party.
4-H Fishing Clinic on July 19 and 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, will take place at Horsepen Lake Wildlife Area. The clinic is open to ages nine through 18. Cost is $10.
If you haven't picked up a copy of the Buckingham County Recreation Summer Programs 2011 booklet, you'll want to stop by the county administration office to get a copy because it's chockfull of things to do this summer. For more information and/or registration, call 969-4242.
Swimming Lessons are available for ages three through 12; and, will be held at the Nazarene Camp's Olympic size pool. The Nazarene Camp is located across from Buckingham County Middle School.
Classes July 11 through 15 are available for ages three to five, on Monday through Thursday from 6:30 to 7 p.m.; and on Friday from 10 to 10:40 a.m. Classes for age six through nine will be held Monday through Thursday from 7:15 to 8: p.m., and on Friday from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m.
Quick Start Tennis: Children ages 6 to 11 are eligible for the Quick Start Tennis program developed by the United States Tennis Association. Designed to introduce tennis to youth at an early age, the program utilizes child-friendly equipment and techniques so that the kids learn while having fun playing tennis.
The first clinic will be held July 11 through 15, and the second clinic is scheduled for August 1 through 5. Classes are held from 6 to 7 p.m. each evening at Ellis Acres Memorial Park. Cost is $20.

On Saturday, July 23, Buckingham will host its third annual celebration of the National Day of The Cowboy. This fun-filled event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Historic Village at Lee Wayside. Admission is $3 for children and $5 for adults.
At 10 a.m., the Cowboy Day Parade will feature special guest and grand marshal The Virginian, James Drury,
Drury played the nameless hero from Virginia on the series, which ran from 1962 through 1971. Also in the line-up is Randy Boone, who played Randy Benton on the series from 1964 to 1966.
After the parade, Boone, who is also a singer and songwriter, will be performing. Other performers include Boyd Anderson who portrays the singing cowboy Herb Jefferies; and Grammy nominated Native American Flutist Roy “Spotted Eagle” Glass.
Chief Steve Silverheels, son of Jay “Tonto” Silverheels from the Lone Ranger television series, will be back again this year and will be accompanied by some Native American Dancers from his Silverheels House of Nations Ministry.
The Tom Mix Rangers, Sprouse's Corner Ranch, Old Dominion Fast Draw Club, and lots of cowboys and cowgirls will be providing mock gunfights, and Old West activities throughout the day.
There will also be demonstrations and exhibits featuring panning for gold, blacksmithing, and an authentic chuck wagon.
Hosted by Historic Buckingham, Inc., Buckingham Chamber of Commerce, and the Tom Mix Rangers, Buckingham's Celebration of the National Day of the Cowboy offers a great day for cowboys and cowgirls of all ages.
