DILLWYN, June 2 – Philip Winston Kitchen Sr., 74, of Dillwyn, went to entertain the angels with his banjo on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Georgia Gunter Kitchen.

Born in Buckingham County on February 22, 1937, he was a son of the late John Denton and Alma Swan Kitchen. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Kitchen was a member of Glory Baptist Church and a US Navy Veteran. In 1966, he started in the home improvement business until his retirement from Dillwyn Home Improvement. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed fishing, motorcycles, bluegrass and gospel music, and loved playing the banjo.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Philip Winston (P.W.) Kitchen Jr. and wife, Susan of Dillwyn; daughter, Sandy K. Sullivan and husband, Lee Jr. of Cumberland; three grandchildren, Kelly Ragland, Alison Kitchen and Burkley Kitchen; three brothers, John D. Kitchen Jr. and wife, Marie, Ronnie T. Kitchen and wife, Mary all of Buckingham, and Kenny Kitchen and wife, Cassie of Green Bay; two sisters, Juanita Davis of San Jose, CA and Joan Mosley of Daytona, FL; mother-in-law, Thelma Gunter of Gladstone; and many loving brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Dawn Kitchen, Eleanor Swatsell, Violet Shannon, and Jean Cooler.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, June 4, at Glory Baptist Church by the Rev. Jeff Worley and the Rev. Billy Swan. Burial will follow in the Kitchen Family Cemetery on Rt. 24, with military rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and VFW #9855 combined honor guard.

The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home Friday, June 3, from 7-8:30 p.m. and other times at the residence.
