Dr. Pamela McDermott, in completing her doctorate of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, was privileged to work with one of the foremost and prolific composers of our time – John Rutter.

This famed Englishman has risen to become one of the most popular writers of large choral works, smaller anthems and carols.

Dr. McDermott experienced firsthand John Rutter's musical philosophies in shaping combinations of sound and powerful listening impact. It is because of the work with Rutter that Dr. McDermott has chosen this “Gloria” to conduct in the Commonwealth Chorale's spring performances.

John Rutter's “Gloria” is one of the most exciting works on today's platforms. Trumpets and trombones are joined with dramatic percussion, brilliant organ, piano, and full chorus and soli. The range of mood is extreme, from a solemn Greek influence to the exultation of the “Gloria.”

The Commonwealth Chorale is extremely proud that Dr. McDermott has chosen this remarkable composition for their Spring Concerts. Performances are April 10 at 3 p.m. at Crenshaw United Methodist Church in Blackstone and April 17 at 3 p.m. at Farmville Presbyterian Church.
