BUCKINGHAM — Are you ready for a little globetrotting?
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Buckingham County High School invites the community to join with them for an evening with Melvin Adams, a former Harlem Globetrotter, on Friday, April 8, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., in the gymnasium at BCHS.
Adams grew up in the Houston-hood and overcoming incredible odds, he became a two-time NCAA III All-American basketball player; played pro basketball; and played for the Harlem Globetrotters.
The evening promises to be one of encouragement, inspiration, and humor as Melvin shares how to live life to its fullest. And, yes, he'll share some of those Globetrotting moves.
This program is free and open to the public.
The Auxiliary of the Dillwyn Volunteer Fire Department is hosting an evening of CASH BINGO on Friday, April 8, at the Dillwyn Fire Station.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and Bingo begins at 7 p.m.
Admission is $20. Please note that no one under 18 will be allowed to play.
Beginning at 6 p.m., burgers and homemade fries, beverages, and desserts will be available.
Welcome Wesleyan Church, located on Route 15 in New Canton has started a Benevolent Fund to help provide assistance to those in need or facing difficulties.
To help raise money for the fund, the church is hosting a Spaghetti Supper on Friday, April 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
You'll be able to dine at the church or arrange for take-out. There is no set cost for the meal but all donations will be greatly appreciated.

In conjunction with the county's annual Spring Clean-Up Campaign, a Free Tire Recycling Day is planned for Saturday April 9, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Food Lion parking lot. Residents with a current county sticker may turn in 20 regular tires per household. Please note that the recycling team will not accept tires with rims, commercial tires, tractor tires, or equipment tires.
Next year, Dillwyn will be celebrating its 100th anniversary. The committee working on the celebration is searching for historical pictures and information on the Town and surrounding area.
To help with that search, Dillwyn is sponsoring a Hunt for History on Saturday, April 9, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Dillwyn Town Hall.
Those with photos featuring Dillwyn in days gone by as well as historic photos of Dillwyn families are encouraged to bring the items to the Town Hall on April 9. The photos and documents will be scanned on site and immediately given back to their owners.
While your documents are being scanned, you'll be able to enjoy free coffee and donuts.
To help raise funds for their Relay for Life team, the BCVRS is sponsoring a Womanless Beauty Pageant on Saturday, April 9, 7 p.m., in the auditorium at Buckingham County High School.
The evening promises a lot of laughter as a courageous group of manly men dress as women and compete for the crown.
Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Admission for children 12 and under is free.
Here's a great Saturday night dinner that will not only offer you good food but you'll being helping Spreading God's Gifts in their mission of good works.
On Saturday, April 9, beginning at 6 p.m. at Buckingham Middle School, Spreading God's Gifts is having a delicious fundraiser-a pancake and sausage dinner. There is no set cost for the meal but donations will be gratefully accepted. All proceeds from the meal benefit this non-profit organization dedicated to helping those in need.

Mourners Valley Baptist Church Youth Ministry will be celebrating their Youth Revival on Sunday, April 10 through Tuesday, April 12.
Becoming the Person God Has Planned for Me to Be will begin on Sunday, April 10 at 3 p.m. with Minister Timothy Flowers of Zech 8 Ministries, in Petersburg. On Monday, April 11, at 7 p.m., Minister Michael Mosely, of Deliverance of Christ Church II in Buckingham, will be in the pulpit. Then, on Tuesday, April 12, at 7 p.m., Minister Patrick Bland of Mount Pero, in Powhatan, will lead the service.

Buckingham Active Seniors, the newly formed organization sponsored by the county's department of recreation, will meet on Tuesday, April 12, 1 p.m., at the VFW Hall on Route 60.
This month's program will feature self-defense for older adults. James Walker, self-defense instructor who also teaches Karate, will be the featured speaker. He will be assisted by Mike Smith.
Plans will also be formalized for a booth at Buckingham County Day and a trip to Richmond.
After the program, light refreshments and games will be available.

Piedmont Virginia Community College invites Buckingham County High School seniors to explore educational opportunities through fun, hands-on challenges and activities at the College on Friday, April 15.
Choose or Lose is a PVCC annual event that introduces high school seniors to its programs and resources. Through hands-on activities and lively competition, students are encouraged to consider their future career possibilities through higher education. The interactive challenges showcase various programs at the college and are held on the Main Stage of the V. Earl Dickinson Building.
Students from BCHS will compete with students from Louisa, Monticello, Murray and William Monroe high schools for various prizes.
Participants are randomly selected to come to the stage while their fellow classmates cheer them on. Judges are on site to assign scores to each high school for each challenge.

Okay BCHS Class of 1986, if you haven't signed up for the upcoming 25th Year reunion, you better get it done now. The reunion is planned for the weekend of April 15-17.
Friday night will be pay your own way at Depot Diner. Saturday night is an adult only soiree at the Dillwyn Rescue Squad building. Cost will be $20 per person.
Festivities will conclude on Sunday with a nondenominational worship and memorial service followed by a family lunch at the Buckingham County Arts Center.

Historic Buckingham Incorporated will meet on Sunday, April 17, 2:30 p.m., at the Curdsville Community Center.

On Sunday, April 17, at 3 p.m., Mourners Valley Baptist Church will celebrate the Third Pastoral Anniversary for Reverend Charles E. Simms and First Lady Simms. The Reverend Dr. Donald Trent, Sr., pastor of Second Union Baptist Church in Goochland, will lead the service. His choir and ushers will accompany him.
Please note that dinner will be served following the morning service.
On Easter Sunday, April 24, at 6 a.m., Mourners Valley will host a Sunrise Service with guest preacher Minister Leslie Johnson. Breakfast will be served following the service, which will be the only service held that day.

The annual spring meeting of the James River WMU will be Sunday, April 17, 3 p.m., at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church.
Guest speaker will be Kristin White, student coordinator with the WMU of Virginia.
As part of the program, students with the Baptist Campus Ministry at Longwood University will present a short skit.
The program coincides with the James River Association's current focus on youth. In July, the association is hosting Impact VA; and will be helping host Youth Encounter in October.

Chestnut Grove Baptist Church is located on Route 612, Chestnut Grove Road, just off Route 636, Francisco Road.
They're back. Those energetic, enthusiastic and somewhat zany puppets known as the Kabin Kritters are heading to town on Sunday, April 17, at 7 p.m. Their mission is to help the youth of Hatcher Baptist Church present an Easter musical, Countdown to Easter.
That loveable dromedary DJ, Cameron Camel will be the host as the Kritters present the Top Five Easter Songs.
Following the Countdown, some of the church's youth will share their musical talents.
And, the Kabin Kritters have enlisted their dedicated Kitchen Crew to prepare refreshments that will be served after the program.
This promises to be a great evening for children of all ages and the welcome mat is out to everyone including youth groups and Sunday school classes.
The Youth of Hatcher will be accepting a love offering for their very special friend, Paul Adkins, to help with the expenses of a kidney transplant.
Paul's family and friends are working with the National Foundation for Transplants to assist with those expenses.

Central Virginia Christian School is hosting its sixth Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, April 30, 9 a.m., at the Farmville Municipal Golf Course. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the CVCS Scholarship Fund.
Cost is $55 per person or $220 per team of four. Lunch and refreshments provided.
Prizes include $300 for first place; $200 for second; and $100 for third. There will also be prizes for the longest drive and (two) closest to the pin competitions.

Buckingham County Lions Club is gearing up for Buckingham County Day. Planned for Saturday, May 14, festivities will once again take place at the park-like site adjacent Buckingham Primary School.
This year's theme, Celebrating 250 Years, promotes and commemorates the county's 250th Anniversary; and, the Lions are working with the county's 250th Anniversary Committee to make this day a very special one.

This year's parade marshal will be Peter Francisco, Buckingham's real-life hero. Francisco will be portrayed by Travis Bowman, an actor and author who is a sixth generation descendant of this famous Revolutionary War soldier.
