DILLWYN, Feb. 3 – Joseph Herbert Mitchell, 70, of Dillwyn, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pearl Newton Mitchell and John William Mitchell, and brothers Jimmy Dale Mitchell and Thomas Garland Mitchell.
He was employed for 50 years by the Virginia Department of Transportation and was a Maintenance Operations Manager. He was a longtime member of the Arvonia Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Dillwyn, where he sang in the choir and attended practice even when he could no longer sing. He was extremely social and outgoing and loved spending time with friends and neighbors.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by a sister, Janie Mitchell Peters and husband, Ron; brother, John William (Bill) Mitchell Jr.; an adopted daughter, Heather Mitchell Finley; grandson, Jason Scott Rose; two nieces and two nephews; and devoted friends and caregivers, Demita JoAnn Jackson and Marie Duty Calhoun.
Remains rest at Dunkum Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Saturday, February 5 from 4 to 7 p.m.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, February 6, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Dillwyn, with interment at Mount Zion Baptist Church, New Canton.
Donations may be made to Arvonia Volunteer Fire Department or the American Cancer Society.
