New Longwood Calendar To Raise Money For Scholarships

A Longwood University 2010-2011 calendar, produced by the Staff Advisory Committee (SAC), is raising money for scholarships.

The calendar is illustrated with photographs of Longwood scenes, events, and students, and it lists important dates in the academic calendar and various university and alumni events. The calendar was printed by Longwood Printing Services and has been available since the week before the winter break.

This is the second consecutive year that the SAC has raised money for scholarships. The committee did so last year by publishing a cookbook.

“We want to try a fundraiser every year,” said Tiffany Dempsey, SAC budget planner and one of three members of a subcommittee that spearheaded the calendar project. “Radford did a calendar last year, and a couple people suggested that we do a calendar. Unlike last year, when only Longwood staff and students were eligible and you had to be attending Longwood, the scholarship this year is also open to staff members' dependents, and you don't have to be a Longwood student.”

The calendar is $8 and can be picked up in Dempsey's office in Lancaster 207. People who want to buy one can call or email Dempsey (395-2106, dempseyte@longwood.edu). Calendars will be mailed to people for an extra $4.95. It will be sold at Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night at the men's basketball game Jan. 25.

Each month has a large photo above the calendar page, with a smaller photo in an inset. Photos include snow scenes (January and February), the 2010 commencement (May), French swimming pool (June), Color Wars at the 2010 Oktoberfest (October), and the Giving Tree in the Rotunda (December). The calendar includes coupons for Moe's and Chick-fil-A.

“The calendar has a combination of color photos and black and white photos, and new photos and older, archival photos,” Dempsey said.

Tim Trent, director of Printing Services, and Dennis Sercombe, associate vice president for marketing & communications, helped produce the calendar. The other members of the calendar subcommittee were Kelly Martin and Jennifer Sawyer, the latter of whom is SAC's secretary.

The SAC cookbook, A Taste of Longwood, was published in November 2009. Proceeds from the 57-page cookbook funded scholarships for three students, two of whom are also staff members. One of those students is a graduate student, the other an undergraduate. The third recipient also is an undergraduate.
