The Buckingham County High School boys basketball team notched its fourth victory on the young season with a 63-45 win over Prince Edward County on Tuesday night at the BCHS Gymnasium.
The Knights (4-1), who haven't lost at home in over two seasons, used a 20-0 run over a quarter-long period in the first half to take early control of the contest, and wasn't seriously challenged.
Tied at 13 apiece late in the first quarter, Buckingham scored the final four points of the first period, and held the Eagles scoreless until late in the second quarter, when Djuan Wilburn hit a three-pointer.
Wilburn scored all eight of PE's points in the second quarter, as the Eagles chipped away at what was a 20-point advantage to trail 35-21 at the intermission.
Buckingham sophomore guard Camre Johnson helped BCHS out to the big lead by scoring 19 of his game-high 22 points in the first half.
Johnson did much of his damage at the foul line, where he hit 11-12 foul shots in the first half.
Prince Edward continued to chip away at the Knights' lead, and at one point got to within nine points at 39-30 in the third quarter, before scoring the final two buckets of the quarter to hold a 43-30 lead heading into the fourth period.
Unlike its home game against Park View last week, Prince Edward was unable to put together a rally that could get the Eagles close enough to put up a challenge in the fourth quarter, despite getting eight fourth quarter points from senior guard Darius Ford.
Seven different Knights scored in the fourth quarter, as they were able to maintain a comfortable lead over the final eight-minute period.
Ford led Prince Edward on the night with 12 points and seven rebounds to go along with five steals and two assists. Wilburn added ten points and five rebounds, while Stephon Evans scored nine points and pulled down six rebounds.
As a team, Prince Edward was 15-65 from the field (23 percent), and 5-22 (23 percent) from three-point range, while going 10-19 (53 percent) from the foul line.
Buckingham was led by Johnson's 22-point effort. He pulled down seven rebounds on the night, and was 11-13 from the foul line. Senior center Kevin Bolden had a double-double with ten points and 15 rebounds, while also recording five blocks and three steals. LA Briley scored ten points, and had four rebounds and four assists on the night, while Caleb White scored eight points to go along with seven rebounds.
As a team, Buckingham was 19-40 (48 percent) from the field, and 0-6 from three-point range. The Knights were 25-36 (69 percent) from the foul line.
Buckingham out-rebounded Prince Edward 40-29, though PE controlled the offensive boards with a 20-6 advantage.
After a short break, Prince Edward will return to the hardcourt on December 28 at the Fluvanna Invitational. The Eagles will play the tournament hosts at 8 p.m., and will play Orange County on Wednesday, December 29 at 6 p.m. The Eagles will begin the new year at Park View on January 5, and will host Powhatan on January 7.
Buckingham will begin James River District play on Tuesday, January 4 at Randolph-Henry, and will host Dogwood District member Appomattox on January 5 and Central of Lunenburg on January 7.
