BUCKINGHAM – The County's department of recreation is gearing-up to serve residents in the 55-plus age group.

After years of providing recreational programs and activities for the younger set, the department is aiming its sights to include programs for all of it citizens.

An interest meeting on organizing a program for residents 55 and up is planned for Tuesday, November 30, 1 p.m., in the auditorium of the Agricultural Center.

“We want to start a program for senior citizens and need their input about types of activities, trips and social events they would like,” offered Ashley R. Harris, assistant director of recreation. “We want to hear what interests they have, how often they would like to meet, and what day as well as time frame would be convenient for them.”

According to Harris, initial plans include the formation of a group that would meet once or twice a month for activities, trips, and socializing with friends.

Harris envisions a program that would offer a wide variety of activities. She said suggestions thus far include meeting for an afternoon of board games, cards and electronic games such as Wii, followed by a meal.

Additionally, the program would encompass classes in art, computer technology, dance, photography, scrapbooking, gardening, exercise, bowling, and cooking, explained Harris.

She said other options could include day and overnight trips for sightseeing, shopping, sports, and entertainment.

“We want to find out what activities and trips would interest people-what they would enjoy,” shared Harris.

“We'd like to start the program as soon as possible,” said Harris, who wants the program to be in place by this winter. “But, we need help and direction from those the program would serve.”

For residents who are unable to attend the meeting on November 30, but would like to offer their input, Ms. Harris may be contacted through the county administration office at (434)969-4242.
