BUCKINGHAM – County residents 55 and over have an opportunity to help the county's recreation department design a program aimed at providing recreational and social activities, classes, and trips for senior citizens.
The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 30, 1 p.m., in the Agricultural Center, next to the county administration building.
This is a great opportunity to share your ideas on the type of program you want; would benefit from and enjoy; and would support.
The county's annual tree lighting at Buckingham Courthouse is planned for Friday, December 3, at 7 p.m.
Festivities will open with a flag ceremony by the Buckingham County High School JROTC Color Guard. The evening will include music by the BCHS band and chorus, and Maynard Jones and Family; a Christmas story read by Joyce Nelson, of the Buckingham Public Library; and a visit with Santa.
Across from the Courthouse, Historic Buckingham, Incorporated will be hosting its annual Christmas open house at the Housewright House Museum.
The museum will be open after the tree lighting ceremony and on Saturday, December 4, from 1 to 4 p.m., and on December 5, from 1 to 8 p.m. The museum will feature period decorations and a special holiday exhibit.
Following the tree lighting, the Buckingham Arts Council will be serving refreshments at the Arts Center, just east of the Courthouse.
On December 4 and 5, the Historic Village at Lee Wayside will also be hosting an open house. On Saturday, December 4, the Village will be open from 1 to 4 p.m.; and, on Sunday, December 5, from 1 to 8 p.m. The Village will be decorated for Christmas. Hot cider and cookies will be served; and children will be making holiday arts and crafts.
The Arvonia Volunteer Fire Department will host its annual Christmas Auction on Friday, December 3, beginning at 7 p.m., at the firehouse.
The inventory includes a huge variety of new items including tools, household items, toys, and lots of miscellaneous stuff including Christmas decorations and gifts.
Along with the new items, the auction will include used furniture and boxed items. There are also boxes of good books-paperbacks and hardbacks.
Needless to say, there is something for everyone. And, food will be available, so you can come hungry.
Proceeds benefit the Arvonia Volunteer Fire Department. The AVFD is located off Route 15 and 615 on Route 675, Arvon Road.
The Buckingham County High School Prom Club is hosting Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon, in the school's cafeteria.
Breakfast includes pancakes and sausages with beverage-juice and coffee. Cost for breakfast is $3 for adults and $2 for children. A picture with Santa will be $6.
Members of the RAGU Club will offer hands-on crafts and will also have baked goods for sale.
Whether you are heading to the woods for a day of hunting for wild game or planning a day of hunting for bargains, here's a great way to fuel-up with some delicious food.
The folks at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church will be fixing breakfast and lunch on Saturday, December 4, with food available from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Menu features ham and sausage biscuits, BBQ, hot dogs, beans, and more. Cost is a donation to the church to help with on-going expenses.

Mt. Tabor UMC is located on Route 56. Everyone is welcome.
The Chamber of Commerce wants to make sure you mark Sunday, December 5, on your calendar. That's when the Chamber will host its Christmas House Tour.
This year's tour will feature the homes of Acie and Robyn Allen, Wayne Davis, Melissa Louis, Kelly Reardon and Ellen Neterer, Freddie and Sarah Sprouse, and Leigh Anne and Dennis Taylor. The tour also includes the Maysville Manor, a historic inn now used as a bed and breakfast and event center.
Ticket holders will also be able to drive through the Historic Village at Lee Wayside, which will highlight period decorations and re-enactors.

High school seniors planning to attend college in 2011 have a great opportunity to learn about financial assistance to help pay the way.
Buckingham County High School is hosting a Financial Aid Workshop on Tuesday, December 7, 6:30 p.m., in the school's library.
According to Sue Miles, director of guidance at BCHS, financial aid experts will be on hand to provide important information that will help students and their families learn more about applying for federal and state money for college.
Parents are encouraged to accompany their son or daughter to this important workshop.
