BUCKINGHAM – The Arvonia Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary is hosting Sterling Silver Jewelry Bingo on Friday, November 12, at 7 p.m., at the Arvonia Firehouse.

All game prizes are real sterling silver with an estimated value between $80 and $150. The grand prize set carries an estimated value of $200. Prices include sets of sterling silver pieces, which could include any two of the following-necklace, bracelet, or earrings.

Tickets are $20 and are available from any AVFD Auxiliary member or by calling Jennifer at (434)981-2088 or Dorothy at 581-1273. Food and beverages will be available.

Upward Basketball

Maysville Baptist Church is sponsoring Upward Basketball for boys and girls in grades first through sixth.

Upward Basketball offers kids a fun environment built around healthy competition. The program teaches skills for the sports arena and values for life. Each athlete will enjoy an exciting game-time experience that improves skills and builds healthy self-confidence.

The program stresses values such as sportsmanship, teamwork, integrity, and respect. And, it's a fun and family friendly league, limiting the time commitment to one practice and one game per week.

Registration is $65. The cost for each additional child per family is $50. Deadline for registration is November 13.

All players must attend the basketball evaluation scheduled for Saturday, November 13, between 9 a.m. and noon, at the Maysville Baptist Church gym.

Practices begin the week of December 13, with the first game scheduled for Saturday, January 8.

Hunters' Breakfast

Sharon Baptist Church will be hosting a Hunters' Breakfast on Saturday, November 20, at the Glenmore Firehouse, located on Firehouse Road, near the intersection of Routes 602 and 655.

The breakfast crew will begin serving at 6 a.m. Menu features scrambled eggs, sausage or sausage gravy, homemade biscuits, coffee and juice.

Cost is a monetary donation that will go to the building fund for the church's fellowship hall.

Bake and Book Sale

The Buckingham County Friends of the Library will host a Bake and Book Sale at the Buckingham County Library on Saturday, November 20 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Planned just before the Thanksgiving holidays, the bake sale will feature pies, cakes, and cookies to help make your Turkey Day a little less stressful and more special.

While you're selecting that dessert, take time to look over the many once read books available at prices that can't be beat. Many of the books are suitable for gift-giving and stocking stuffing.

If you have books you would like to donate for this sale, please bring them to the library by Friday, November 19.

All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Library's building fund.

Sharing Thanksgiving

Central Virginia Christian School is offering a free Thanksgiving meal to families in need on Wednesday, November 24.

If you or someone you know is experiencing difficult financial times or have recently become unemployed, you are welcome to attend.

The meal is available for the first 200 people to call and reserve a place. Call 983-4810 before Friday, November 19 for reservations.

Financial Aid for Students

High school seniors planning to attend college in 2011 have a great opportunity to learn about financial assistance to help pay the way.

Buckingham County High School is hosting a Financial Aid Workshop on Tuesday, December 7, 6:30 p.m., in the school's library.

According to Sue Miles, director of guidance at BCHS, financial aid experts will be on hand to provide important information that will help students and their families learn more about applying for federal and state money for college.

Parents are encouraged to accompany their son or daughter to this important workshop.

Neighborhood Watch

The Buckingham Neighborhood Watch continues to meet on the third Monday of the month, with the next meeting planned for Monday, November 15, 6:30 p.m., at Fork Union Baptist Church.

Everyone is invited to join with this group of residents dedicated to making the community a safer place to live.

Fork Union Baptist Church is located near Buckingham Courthouse, off Route 60, on Dixie Hill Road, Route 638.
