Leslie To Speak At Hampden-Sydney

On Thursday, October 14, Dr. W. Bruce Leslie will speak at Hampden-Sydney College. His topic, in conjunction with the Presidential Inauguration of Dr. Christopher Howard this year, is “There are Those Who Love It: The American Liberal Arts College and Its Unique Heritage.”

Leslie says, “I fell in love with liberal arts colleges as an undergraduate at Princeton and have been lucky enough to spend a career translating that sensibility to a state college making the transition from being a teachers college. My book, Gentlemen and Scholars, examines the evolution of liberal arts colleges in what is usually dubbed 'the age of the university' (the period since the Civil War).”

While Leslie has been at The College at Brockport in SUNY for over four decades, he has spent considerable time teaching and doing research overseas. He taught in Scotland and Denmark on a Fulbright, and is a member of Wolfson College, University of Cambridge, teaching on the origins of American higher education.
