BUCKINGHAM – When the Curious Corner Store opens on Saturday, October 30, the Woman's Club of Buckingham County will be celebrating the 30th year of this weeklong fundraiser.
Curious Corner Store offers a thrift store, bake sale, and lunchtime diner all rolled into one. Held at the VFW Hall on Route 60, Curious Corner Store will operate on Saturday, October 30 through Thursday, November 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.
The inventory includes used clothing in good condition, bric-a-brac, Christmas crafts and decorations, Rada knives, fresh pecans, and baked goods. And, there is the ever-popular raffle that offers great prizes. Plus, you'll be able to order fresh wreaths for Christmas.
Lunch is served each day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and features a menu prepared and served by the members.
Proceeds from Curious Corner are distributed throughout this community and beyond. And that is why you just got to stop by and shop.
Friday, October 29, is Free Movie Night at Maysville Baptist Church. This month's movie is Meet the Robinsons.
Free movie night includes a great movie suitable for ages, free popcorn, and free lemonade. And, everyone is welcome.
Buckingham County Volunteer Rescue Squad is offering two different activities for Halloween.
On Friday, October 29, from 7 p.m. to midnight, the squad will host Fright Night Boo Thru. “Beware of what bumps in the dark,” offers the squad. Cost will be $5 per car.
On Saturday, October 30, from 4 to 7 p.m., the squad is sponsoring Trick or Treat for Children. Activities will include games, candy, and a costume contest at 5 and 6 p.m. There will also be a bicycle raffle for boy's and girl's bikes. The Trick or Treat for Children is free; however, tickets for the bike raffle are $1 each.
Both activities will be hosted at the Dillwyn Squad Building, located off Route 15, behind Moss Motor Company on Wingo Road.
On Saturday, October 30, beginning at 6 p.m., Buckingham Baptist Church, on Route 15 near Gold Hill, will host a Trunk or Treat.
This safe alternative to going door-to-door is open to all area children, including those masquerading as ghosts and goblins.
Historic Buckingham, Incorporated will be hosting its Spooky Hollow Drive-Thru at the Historic Village at Lee Wayside on Saturday, October 30, from 7 to 9 p.m.
For $10 per vehicle, you'll not only enjoy a spooky Halloween tradition but you'll also be helping to raise funds for the Historic Village, a real treat indeed.
The Historic Village at Lee Wayside is located just off Route 60, approximately two miles west of Sprouses Corner.
Bethlehem Baptist Church is continuing its tradition of hosting a grand Trunk or Treat for children 12 and under.
This year's event will be held on Halloween night, Sunday, October 31, from 6 to 7 p.m., at the church. Everyone is invited.
Bethlehem Baptist Church is located at the intersection of Route 20 and Route 631, Troublesome Creek Road.
Straight Street Buckingham, Inc. is teaming up with the Buckingham Sherriff's Office to offer a Safety Fair on Saturday, October 30 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, at the Straight Street building located on Route 20.
Law enforcement officers will be on hand to do car-seat safety checks; provide information about internet safety; and offer safety tips for Halloween trick-or-treating.
Treats will be given to the first fifty children who come with an adult.
Buckingham 4-H is planning a BBQ Sale on Friday, November 12, with orders ready for pick-up from 3:30 to 6 p.m.
Pork BBQ items can be pre-ordered by calling the Buckingham Extension Office at 969-4261. The form is available at http://offices.ext.vt.edu/buckingham/
The menu features chopped pork BBQ at $8 per pound; Boston butts at $30 each; whole pork loins at $30 each and halves for $20. To top the BBQ, pints of Myers BBQ sauce will be available at $5 per pint. Orders must be prepaid by November 3.
Along with the delicious BBQ, the 4-H is selling African violet plugs grown from seeds in the extension office. The violets are available for $2 each.
Okay, let's see, we're talking about delicious BBQ pork topped with Myers special recipe BBQ sauce. Doesn't that make supporting the 4-H a tad bit too easy?
Proceeds will be used to support 4-H programming and volunteer development along with providing scholarships for youth in financial need.
First Baptist Church of Dillwyn will host a prayer service for Baptist Women's Day of Prayer on Monday, November 1, at 7 p.m.
This year's theme In Step with the Spirit features the Fruits of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:25.
Organizers are inviting all area churches and are calling all women to come pray. And, yes, men are welcome, too.
Everyone is encouraged to come and join in prayer for the world, the nation, and the depressed state of women around the world.
“We can make a difference for the women in our world by praying, giving, and educating,” shared a spokesperson.
An offering will be taken for the Women's Department of the Baptist World Alliance.
First Baptist Church of Dillwyn is located on Route 15 in the Town of Dillwyn.
On Saturday, November 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Salem United Methodist Church is hosting Meet Your Neighbor Day. Free hot dogs and drinks will be provided.
And, while you meet your neighbors, you'll also be able to purchase delicious home baked goods and homemade soup. Soup will be sold by the bowl or quart.
Salem UMC is located on Ca Ira Road, Route 632. Everyone is welcome.
The Arvonia Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary is hosting Sterling Silver Jewelry Bingo on Friday, November 12, at 7 p.m., at the Arvonia Firehouse. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, too.
All game prizes are real sterling silver with an estimated value between $80 and $150. The grand prize set carries an estimated value of $200. Prices include sets of sterling silver pieces, which could include any two of the following-necklace, bracelet, or earrings.
